Simple steps for healthy laundry.
This morning was all about your grocery shopping. On your list: laundry detergent . You'd been mindlessly reaching for your usual brand for months, maybe even years. But strangely, this morning you lingered over the ingredients label... Ouch! It was becoming difficult to read, maybe even incomprehensible. That's normal, since you didn't take a chemistry option during your studies... A slight anxiety had just overcome you: you had no idea what ingredients were impregnating your entire family's clothes... Immediate awareness and an urgent need to change your habits.
You'll now be doing good for your skin every day (in addition to moisturizing it well, but that's another topic) and at the same time doing good for the planet. How? By making your own laundry detergent! (Remember that the average Canadian family uses between 20 and 40 liters of toxic cleaning products per year.)
Here is a recipe using Marseille soap (from Atelier d'Anissina ) to make your own economical, healthy and ecological laundry detergent that will wash whites and colors thoroughly (and gently).
Well-being will now be present in everyday life!
Ingredients:
- 2 liters of water
- 150 g of grated Marseille soap or flakes (if you grate it yourself, make fairly fine shavings so that the soap dissolves easily).
- 150 g of soda crystals (not caustic soda, which is very dangerous, but crystals (or sodium carbonate) (degreasing and deodorizing, they neutralize the limescale effect of water and therefore reinforce the cleaning power of the soap).
- 6 tablespoons of baking soda (softens and neutralizes odors)
- 1 or 2 teaspoons of essential oils (powerful disinfectants and for perfume ).
The secret formula:
-
- Boil a liter of water with the grated soap while stirring. Let it cook over low heat for 5 to 10 minutes, without stopping stirring or it will boil over.
- Off the heat, when the mixture has cooled a little (when you can dip your finger in), add one after the other while mixing, the soda crystals diluted in a little water... a liter of cold water and finally when the mixture is almost cold the bicarbonate of soda.
- Blend until the mixture becomes smooth (this is easiest with a hand blender).
- Let cool completely in the pan.
- Add the essential oils and mix again until you obtain a smooth and homogeneous texture.
- Transfer to a 3-litre container so that the mixture can be shaken later.
Let it sit for a week to allow the essential oils to soak into the product. You can also prepare it the day before, but you still need to let it sit for at least one night. To keep your laundry detergent always smooth: let it sit in the pan for a day and mix from time to time...this is the key to preventing it from "re-solidifying".
The dosage:
Shake the can before each use.
Use 10 to 20 cl of detergent per machine depending on how dirty the laundry is. Pour the liquid into the detergent compartment or into a plastic ball directly in the drum.
In the fabric softener compartment, pure vinegar or homemade fabric softener (I'll share the recipe with you soon) to remove soap residue.
Be careful with washable diapers. The glycerin in Marseille soap makes baby diapers waterproof. You should use Marseille soap without glycerin.
The original Marseille soap officially appeared in 1371. Its ecological and cosmetic properties have made its reputation. Its effectiveness is well-established, and its exceptional benefits are praised by health professionals, even for the most sensitive skin.
To recognize real Marseille soap, you need to know its different characteristics:
There are two types of soap: green and white. Green soap is made from olive oil to which coconut and palm oil are added. The difference with white soap? The latter does not contain olive oil but peanut oil.
The “extra-pure” soap contains 72% of these oils, which are themselves 100% vegetable.
It is considered natural because it does not contain any synthetic coloring or additives.
Marseille soap meets all the criteria of the organic and cosmebio labels. It contains no GMOs, chemical preservatives, colorants, or synthetic fragrances. Finally, it is not tested on animals.
