Glyphosate - 41% Increase in Cancer Risk! This is what a new study reveals about the increased cancer risk caused by Roundup's glyphosate!

A comprehensive analysis of glyphosate—the world's most widely used weed-killing chemical—reveals that people most exposed to the popular herbicide have a 41% increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. (ExoPortail note: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a cancer that develops from cells in the lymphatic system.)

The meta-analysis of six studies involving nearly 65,000 participants also examined links between glyphosate-based herbicides and immunosuppression, endocrine disruption, and genetic changes.

"The study authors said their new meta-analysis evaluated all published human studies, including an updated 2018 government-funded study known as the Agricultural Health Study (AHS). Monsanto had cited the updated AHS study as evidence that there is no link between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer. In the new meta-analysis, the researchers said they focused on the highest-exposure group in each study because these people would be more likely to be at elevated risk if glyphosate-based herbicides did cause NHL ." – The Guardian

"Taken together, all meta-analyses conducted to date, including ours, consistently report the same key finding: glyphosate exposure is associated with an increased risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma," the report concludes.

The study, which included both humans and animals, also suggests that glyphosate " alters the gut microbiome ," which could " impact the immune system, promote chronic inflammation, and contribute to susceptibility to invading pathogens ."

Additionally, glyphosate " may act as an endocrine disruptor because it has recently been found to alter the production of sex hormones " in male and female rats. Finally, the study looks at the genetic alterations caused by glyphosate, noting that several studies show that glyphosate induces " single- and double-strand DNA breaks ," oxidation, and other "genotoxicity"—though the researchers caution that this remains a controversial topic. "The findings by five US scientists contradict the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) safety assurances for the weedkiller and come as regulators in several countries consider limiting the use of glyphosate-based products in agriculture. Monsanto and its German owner Bayer AG face more than 9,000 lawsuits in the US from people with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who blame Monsanto's glyphosate-based herbicides for their illnesses. The first plaintiff to go to trial won a unanimous jury verdict against Monsanto in August, a verdict the company has appealed. The next trial, involving a separate plaintiff, is scheduled to begin on February 25, with several more trials scheduled this year and in 2020." – The Guardian

Monsanto claims there is no legitimate scientific research conclusively linking glyphosate to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or any other type of cancer—pointing to the fact that the EPA's conclusion that the herbicide is " unlikely " to cause cancer is supported by hundreds of studies. They have questioned claims by scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) who classified glyphosate as a " probable human carcinogen " in 2015, suggesting that the researchers engaged in inappropriate conduct that failed to adequately consider several important studies.

As The Guardian notes, " the new analysis could potentially complicate Monsanto's defense of its best-selling herbicide ," since three of the study's authors were tapped by the EPA as board members to serve on a scientific advisory panel on glyphosate in 2016.

This paper demonstrates more clearly than previous meta-analyses that there is evidence of an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma due to glyphosate exposure ,” says co-author Lianne Sheppard, a professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington. “ From a population health perspective, there are real concerns. ” Sheppard was an EPA advisor on glyphosate, and one of the three advisors told the agency that it hadn’t followed proper scientific protocols when it concluded that glyphosate was unlikely to cause cancer. “That was wrong,” says Sheppard. “ It was obvious they weren’t following their own rules! ” she says. “ Is there evidence that it’s carcinogenic? The answer is yes!” The EPA says it is “reviewing the study!

The Monsanto Papers have generated a lot of attention in the United States and Europe over the past two years, but very little here in Canada. In the midst of this controversy, Health Canada has just renewed the approval of glyphosate for a further 15 years. This situation raises worrying questions about the approval process in the country.

The program La semaine verte has been denouncing Monsanto for about two years. The program Enquête has also covered this topic twice; here are the links here and there .

Eating organic… Less risk of cancer

A new study conducted by French researchers from 2009 to 2016 suggests that those who eat organic food are less likely to develop cancer. According to the researchers, people who consume mostly conventionally grown produce may be more exposed to pesticides. Yes, even in small doses, pesticides are dangerous to health . Also, organically grown foods may contain more antioxidants, polyphenols, and vitamin C, micronutrients that protect the body's cells.

Some details of this study here in a recent report from Téléjournal on Radio-Canada.

Encouraging results and further studies are underway. Yes, eating organic has a real positive impact on health!
