Essential Oils to Help Insomnia

Huiles essentielles pour aider l'insomnie

We received an email from a mother whose daughter has trouble falling asleep and wanted to know more about essential oils she could use.

I asked Luc to advise her on which essential oils would be appropriate for her situation. For over ten years, I have been following his recommendations, being his acquaintances: he has been using them for 31 years and it has been his profession (aromatherapist) since 1988.

"So, Roman chamomile essential oil is perfect for your child. This essential oil is used in a dose of a few drops rubbed on the feet, each side of the spine and the back of your child's neck (6 drops in total). It is not necessary to add vegetable oil. Chamomile is very gentle on children's skin. I have already used it on much younger children. This essential oil is not cheap, I grant you, but it gives very good results.
Additionally, children love the smell of mandarin (red, if possible). Mandarin is very calming for the nervous system and promotes sleep. Diffuse this essential oil in your daughter's room using a diffuser. You can also place a few drops on a tissue near the pillow. Be careful, mandarin essential oil stains fabrics, so be careful not to spill it on the sheets.
Additionally, there are some dietary considerations to consider. Chocolate, food colorings (most of which are petroleum by-products), and sugar are among the nervous system stimulants. Colorings are allergens that overstimulate the nervous system.

Of course, there are psycho-emotional considerations that are longer and more delicate to resolve (insecurity, fear) which could make it more difficult for your child to give in to sleep."
