What a wonderful idea to plant for food: a blackberry hedge, a blackcurrant border, kiwi vines, an edible flowerbed, an apple tree on the balcony, small fruits on the wall above the banister, ... so many possibilities to honor the earth that nourishes and delights us every day!

And it's not complicated!

Let’s recap, when planting:

- Plant bare-root trees in spring (before May 15) or in fall

-Temporary storage: If no cold room, put in a cool place or plant in the ground),

-Choice of site (sun, good soil, good drainage)

-Do not let the roots dry out

- Spread the roots well

-Compost

-Basin if spring, be careful not to leave a bowl in the fall

-Tutor for the first few years. If it is a dwarf apple tree, tutor for life.

-Tutor attachment

-Graft point not to be buried, unless the rootstock is less hardy (in the case of plum and apricot trees, the graft point is buried)

-Mulch (example: BRF = Fragmented branch wood)

-Permanent label or make a plan

-Watering after planting

-Check if you need another DIFFERENT variety because the majority are not self-fertile

-Same principle for the majority of fruit trees. Some exceptions like blueberries and raspberries are planted differently.

Advice

-Choosing the right fruit tree: Suitable climate zone, disease resistance, Pollination (self-fertile or cross-pollination)

-Compost (before June 1st) otherwise it harms *hardening (see details at the end of the document). If manure, it must be well decomposed or fertilizer

-August, add potassium

-Irrigation the first year, avoid watering too often

-Weed control (weeding)

-Mulch (example: BRF)

-Mole Protectors

-Remove the fruits the first year

-Remove any suckers

-Pruning trees in spring or pruning dead or diseased branches

Augmentation

* Physiological change

* Preparation for winter

* Hardening off new shoots for winter

What harms the hardening?

* Fertilization too late

* Wet, poorly drained soil

* Too much shade if sun is required

Wishing you a good common sense move!
