An incredible 3,000-year-old Ayurvedic practice for improving oral hygiene and so much more. Magazine contributor Nadia Sofia told me about this morning ritual that's eager to be shared!
How to whiten your teeth, destroy bacteria and fungi, and improve the quality of your gums naturally? With a surprising and very enjoyable ritual. An entire book is dedicated to the act of oil pulling. Dr. Bruce Fife writes that oil acts as a cleanser, removing bacteria and other debris from your teeth and gums.
In concrete terms, you just need to keep one to three tablespoons of oil (sesame, sunflower or coconut, organic and raw) in your mouth for around 20 minutes and then spit it out (into the bin so as not to block the pipes).
The oil is then transformed into a whitish liquid. And the feeling it leaves in the mouth is wonderful. If I continue with Dr. Fife's explanations: our mouths are inhabited by billions of bacteria, viruses and other parasites and their toxins, germs and their residues that cause the deterioration of gums, teeth as well as health problems (arthritis, heart problems, menstrual problems). Our immune system is constantly fighting against these troublesome agents. If it is overworked (stress, poor diet, environmental toxins), the toxins can then spread throughout our bodies, causing other health problems.
My friend, by practicing this routine every day, not only gained beautiful and healthy white teeth, but also, her gums regained lost health and can now protect the roots of the teeth as they should.
In my case, by the second day I wanted to get out of bed to start my new ritual. Several months later, I can confirm that it has reversed my minor problems. I also love the sensation, the hydration, and the filter it leaves in my mouth.
Concretely, when I wake up, I pass a small stick (popsicle) on my tongue to remove the biggest residue then, I take a little water to rinse my mouth (you can also brush your teeth but only with water, not toothpaste) and I put on my sesame oil shooter: I pass it on my teeth and gums. My children laugh, my boyfriend copies me but in less time. I want to be sure so I go for the 20 minutes, while he thinks in terms of concentration of collateral effects at the beginning of the process!
And here are the effects we can gain:
- whiter teeth
- healthier gums
- better breath
- better energy
- better clarity of mind
- and so on!
The first two or three times might make you want to vomit! But it's worth it to keep going! The ritual becomes enjoyable and you can't do without it!!
