Allergic to hazelnut oil?

Allergie à l'huile de noisette ?

I have food allergies to hazelnuts. Is it possible to massage myself with its vegetable oil? Do you think it could cause allergies when it comes into contact with my skin?

Here is the response from Hélène Leroux, nutritionist-dietitian at Allergies Québec:

I would say there is a small risk if you have a confirmed hazelnut allergy.

The risk of simple skin contact causing a serious allergic reaction is relatively low. Rather, a local reaction, i.e., at the site of contact, may occur.

On the other hand, in a situation where the skin is damaged (e.g. by eczema, cuts, etc.) or there is an involuntary transfer to the mouth, the risk of triggering a serious allergic reaction is definitely increased, see here .

On the other hand, oils don't usually contain much protein and therefore don't pose a risk, especially if they're highly refined. You might want to check that out as well.

You wrote "prone to allergies." Does that mean you're not sure? Testing with an allergist might help. Is it because you're allergic to other types of nuts? Keep in mind that an allergy to one nut doesn't necessarily mean you'll be allergic to all nuts! Again, an allergist can help.
