Organic certification

Here are the articles of the Biological Specifications targeted by this type of claim:

1. Information relating to the organic production method

1.1 A product is considered to bear indications relating to the organic production method when on the label, in advertising or in commercial documents, the product or its ingredients are characterized by the following statements:

• “biological”, “organic” and “ organic ”.

• the terms “cultivé biologiquement” or “ organically grown ”, “lévé biologiquement” or “ organically raised ” and “produit biologiquement” or “ organically produced ” and any other similar terms, including abbreviations, symbols or phonetic expressions of these terms that encourage retailers and consumers to understand by inference that it is a product from organic farming (under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations ).

HOWEVER:

• Under section 353(3) of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations , organic ingredients in a multi-ingredient product that is not organic may be listed on the ingredient list on the label.6 This section does not apply to single-ingredient products.

In summary:

The only place where the organic designation can be used is in the list of ingredients following the regulations above. This only applies to the label of multi-ingredient products. You must have the certificates of conformity for the organic ingredients in question.

Any mention of the type “made from organic ingredients” is therefore prohibited on a non-certified product.
