A few steps towards permaculture

Quelques pas vers la permaculture

*Drawings and texts by Amy René

Because each day is marked by small and sometimes larger steps toward what nourishes my values, what makes sense for me, future generations, and the earth. I'm constantly seeking to learn more about permaculture, and here are a few tips I'll share with you.

Biodynamic agriculture

What is biodynamic agriculture? Following the lunar calendar to know the best times to work the soil, sow, transplant, water, harvest, and process the land's produce.

  • New Moon: Promotes balanced growth of roots and seeds.
  • 2nd quarter: Stimulates foliage growth
  • Full moon: Promotes germination success rate (a few days before).
  • Last quarter: Leave the garden to rest.

See the lunar calendar + some growing tips adapted to the day!

And see here if we are one day flowers, leaves, roots, fruits or black!

  • Flower Days: Developing Floral Potential
  • Leaf days: Development of foliage (e.g. lettuce, spinach, herbs, etc.)
  • Root days: Development of roots (e.g. carrots, turnips, potatoes, etc.)
  • Fruit days: Development or harvest of fruits (e.g. tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, etc.)
  • Black days: Unfavorable time to work the soil.

Companionship in the garden

Herbs + flowers = harmonious coexistence!

The smell of herbs keeps pests away by masking the scent of flowers!

  • Mint: Repels ants, mice, etc.
  • Nasturtium or basil: Keeps aphids away
  • Rosemary, thyme and lavender: Repels moths.

Please note:

  • Tomatoes + nasturtiums = Improved taste
  • Strawberries + Marigold = Pest Control

Seed recovery

  1. Pick faded flowers from the garden or some flowers can be dried after picking: Hang, head upside down, in a dry place away from light (2-4 weeks).
  2. Remove the petals if necessary, the seeds are at the heart of the flower.
  3. Collect the seeds in a bowl or on a sheet of white paper.
  4. Place the seeds in a bag or paper envelope to ensure they dry completely.
  5. Don't forget to indicate the type of flower and the date : )
