Why do we need protein – and are we eating enough?

Pourquoi avons-nous besoin de protéines - et en mangeons-nous suffisamment ?

We often think of protein when we talk about training and muscles. Yet, it is essential to us far beyond the gym.

Our body constantly uses them to build, maintain, and renew its tissues. They notably contribute to maintaining muscle mass and producing enzymes, hormones, and many molecules essential for the body's functioning.¹

Protein, every day

Unlike carbohydrates and lipids, our body does not have a large reserve of protein that it can simply draw upon when the diet does not provide enough.¹

It is therefore important to consume it regularly.

And this question becomes particularly interesting with age: preserving muscle mass and strength helps to stay strong, mobile, and active as we get older.²

Physical activity - particularly resistance exercises - and adequate protein intake then work together.³

How much do we need?

There is no perfect number for everyone.

Needs vary according to weight, age, diet, level of physical activity, and individual goals.

In Canada, the recommended dietary allowance for a healthy adult is 0.8 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. However, this is a guideline intended to cover the needs of most healthy adults, and not necessarily an optimal target for every person.

Highly active individuals and older adults, in particular, may benefit from paying particular attention to their protein intake.³

Quality matters as much as quantity

To go further: discover how to choose a good plant-based protein.

A protein is made up of amino acids.

Nine of them are called essential : our body cannot produce them in sufficient quantities and must obtain them through food.

That's why we didn't just want to create a powder at Maison Jacynthe that displayed a lot of protein.

We wanted a complete and carefully balanced essential amino acid profile, from complementary plant-based sources.

Why take protein powder?

Because it can make things wonderfully simple.

It does not replace a varied diet. Rather, it allows you to easily add protein when a meal contains little, after training, or simply when our daily life is too fast.

In a smoothie, with plant-based milk, or simply mixed with water: in a few seconds, you can supplement your intake.

But since we may be called upon to consume it every day, its composition matters enormously.

At Maison Jacynthe, we wanted it clean, digestible, sugar-free, and without anything that is not useful.

Not an endless list of ingredients to give the impression of offering more.

Just what we were really looking for.

Good plant-based proteins. A complete amino acid profile. And a simple way to provide our body with one of its essential materials every day.
