I've known Alvaro since I started acting. I knew his reputation and that of his famous parties! I dreamed of having my hair done by him.
One fine evening at the Continental restaurant (which I still love), I met his muse, Audrey Benoit, who encouraged me to approach him. We never left each other's side. I had absolutely no reason to be intimidated: he is the most generous and warm-hearted person I know. Everyone loves Alvaro.
At his salon, we meet France Castel, Anne-Marie Dussault, Geneviève Brouillette, Catherine Pogonat, Julie St-Pierre, Anaïs Barbeau, Danielle Ouimet, Diane Dufresne, Guy Corneau, Paul Piché, André Boisclair, Réjean Thomas, Lisette Lapointe, Gilbert Sicotte, Mario St-Amand, M. Laurendeau, Vincent Bilodeau, Colette Provencher, Sophie Chiasson, Michèle Richard, Audrey Benoit, Francine Grimaldi, who still has hair under her turbans: he is the only one who knows them!
On the walls of his living room, photos of those who passed through his hands and who also became his friends: Marie-Josée Croze, Johanne Corno, Éric Lapointe, Kathleen,... John Travolta!
Does that make him a star? But he doesn't think about it, because for him, a client who walks into the salon is already a star, and the challenges are just as significant. His clients are loyal. Their daughters follow. It's his gift. Over time, he's also surrounded himself with a great team. For example, his partner and friend (and mine too: he looks after my house when I'm away on vacation!) Kevin breathed new life into his career four years ago. Their salon is modern; they're moving toward the future.
His star: Alvaro's debut in 1979: he had the chance to meet Céline Lomez, still a friend and client. Thanks to her and through her, Louise Portal, and several others followed. He had a star as a hairdresser to the stars. As an assistant, he had taken care of the hair of Dalida, Mireille Mathieu: he worked at the salon of the Hotel Place Bonaventure where big personalities passed by. Catherine Deneuve had him do her hair styling. He took care of Burt Lancaster every day during the filming of Atlantic City . From Alice Parizeau to Corinne Côté Levesque and Audrey Best, the wives of big politicians also trusted him. As he was at the beginning of Clin D'oeil , he did the covers for the magazine for about ten years as well as editorials. Elle also contributed to his reputation. In 1978, journalists from La Gazette and La Presse considered him one of the youngest great hairdressers; he was 23 years old! For 20 years, he performed at the Adisq and Gémeaux galas (again this year). For the past 4 years, he has been very proud to perform at the Jutras!
His first salon was on Crescent Street in the 1980s, then on Bernard Street, and today, he can be found on Laurier Street. I invite you to visit him... he'll be delighted!
