Our essentials for a zero-waste and minimalist lifestyle
It is important to gently integrate these gestures into our routine and to respect our personal limits in order to remain in pleasure.
Kitchen
Shop in bulk or choose unpackaged products at the grocery store. (Baleco makes excellent refillable cleaning products in bulk.)
Use your containers for shopping (reusable bags for bulk items, Mason jars for liquid products such as oil, vinegar, etc., and reusable dishes for fish, meat, cheese, etc.)
Clean out our cupboards by giving away everything we haven't used in the last 3 months. (Utensils, spices, food processor, etc.)
Favor reusable items over single-use ones (coffee cups, stainless steel straws, beeswax sheets to replace plastic wrap, La Fabrik éco sandwich bags, washable sponges or tawashi, etc.)
Compost your organic waste
Bathroom
Choose products that can be found in bulk (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothpaste: Rose citron makes an excellent one)
Favor bar soap over shower gel
Make your own beauty products or choose those that can be refilled in bulk (many companies offer their products in bulk: Biobelle, Pépin, Bkind, etc.)
Clean out your medicine cabinet and keep only what you actually use. You can take your old products to your local pharmacy.
Favor natural cleaning products (vinegar, baking soda, essential oils)
Laundry room
Make your own laundry detergent (Jacynthe's recipe is great!) or buy it in bulk
Replace dryer sheets with wool balls when drying, adding essential oils to the balls to scent the laundry. Laundry fabric softener can be replaced with a little white vinegar.
Air dry your clothes to be more eco-friendly and save on your electricity bill.
Marseille soap makes a fabulous stain remover when rubbed directly onto stains.
Bedroom
Donate clothes you no longer wear and encourage second-hand clothing.
Rent your books from the local library instead of hoarding them.
Favor natural fibers and quality clothing that will last a long time.
