3. Marie-Antoinette’s Rose Water and Other Voluptuous Perfumes from History – Élisabeth De Feydeau

''The perfume of a queen or a king sometimes reveals an unsuspected facet of their personality...''

Élisabeth De Feydeau is a French historian and writer who is also an expert in perfume. In this book, she reveals, with pleasure and delight, the beauty secrets of sovereigns and their often immoderate taste for perfumes, synonymous with both power and seduction. Not to mention a bit of history on the origin of these equally seductive perfumes, which have traveled throughout the centuries.

To give you an idea, here are a few snippets in summary:

Catherine de Medici is particularly known for having launched the fashion for scented gloves, an essential item of her time since they were worn by people of all walks of life. The glove was not only adorned with stones but also covered in perfumes. It is said that once she became Queen of France, she quickly imposed the fashion for Italian citrus and aromatic perfumes, as well as for small scented bottles that were slipped into the pockets of clothing.

Marie-Antoinette was praised for her beauty, her natural grace, and her desire to please. King Louis XVI, her husband, offered her the Petit Trianon, which would become her refuge when the good weather returned, so she could live there without being spied on. She loved this place so much that she asked her perfumer to bottle the Trianon for her. She loved this place so much that she would like to take it with her, everywhere. He took up the challenge by composing a perfume whose main note was rose absolute, both seductive and protective, bringing together the most precious and noble essences. For the rose was one of the queen's favorite flowers. Perfumes and flowers would be her ultimate comfort until the last and worst moments of her life, which ended tragically.

Eugenie, this seductive and sophisticated empress, loved luxury and encouraged her husband, Emperor Napoleon III, to stimulate the perfume industry. She was said to be frivolous but admired for her elegance and charm, and exuded a fascinating and enveloping aura. It was during the Second Empire that the fashion for patchouli perfumes was launched, an intoxicating scent referring to love and seduction. Eugenie was a lover of scents; she knew how to seduce and did not hesitate to use this captivating patchouli.

Not forgetting, the other famous people:

The water of the Queen of Hungary which becomes Eau de Cologne - Josephine or the madwoman for musk - Napoleon's Eau de Cologne - Queen Victoria's floral soaps - Sissi's marvelous scent - Louis XIV's orange blossom - Cleopatra's myrrh and Kyphi.

Passionate about history, monarchies and perfumes, you will all be delighted by this reading!
