Blue light is said to affect this gland, whose main function is to secrete melatonin. Here is an interesting quote from the book Femmes Essentielles by Aude Maillard, doctor of pharmacy: "The blue light from screens when they are used in the evening inhibits the secretions of melatonin and leads to a decrease in alertness in the morning upon waking. This hormone is synthesized via the pineal gland, also called the "third eye," when the brightness decreases, to initiate the sleep cycle. Light information is in fact transmitted by neurons equipped with photoreceptors via the eye, and more precisely via a photosensitive protein, melanopsin. This transmission of light information contributes largely to neuroendocrine balance and circadian day/night functioning." 2
