Not all collagens are created equal

How to choose a good collagen? The criteria that really make a difference.

Given the number of powders, drinks, and formulas available today, one question often comes up: how to choose a good collagen?

The answer is not only found on the front of the container. You need to look at the source of the collagen, its form, the actual amount provided per serving, and what accompanies it.

Here is what you need to know.

1. Look for hydrolyzed collagen

Collagen is naturally a large protein that is difficult to digest. When hydrolyzed, it is broken down into smaller peptides that are much better absorbed by the body.

This is the form in which collagen is now widely studied in oral supplementation.

Clinical studies1 on hydrolyzed collagen peptides suggest, among other things, interesting effects on certain skin parameters, including hydration and elasticity, which helps reduce wrinkles. A meta-analysis of 26 randomized studies observed an improvement in these two parameters, while highlighting that the quality and results of the studies remain variable.

First thing to do: look for the words “hydrolyzed collagen” or “collagen peptides”.

2. Look at the amount of collagen - not just the serving size

Two containers may seem comparable but provide very different amounts of collagen.

You should therefore look for the actual amount of hydrolyzed collagen per serving.

In studies2 on the skin, different doses have been studied. A recent systematic review of ten randomized trials reports doses ranging from 1 to 10 g per day, with favorable results on skin hydration and elasticity.

The amount matters.

3. Marine or bovine: does it really determine the quality?

Collagen can come from different sources, notably marine or bovine.

Marine collagen comes from fish and is an excellent option for people who prefer this source.

But “marine” is not enough on its own to guarantee that a collagen is superior.

A meta-analysis¹ on hydrolyzed collagen also observed that fish collagen was just as effective as all the different sources studied for improving skin hydration and elasticity.

You need to consider the whole picture: source + hydrolysis + amount + quality of the formulation.

4. Look at what accompanies the collagen

This is where the formulas really start to stand out.

Collagen can be offered alone or combined with other ingredients.

One of those we are particularly interested in is hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in the body, especially in the skin, where it mainly helps improve its hydration.

Rather than simply multiplying the ingredients, we prefer to ask ourselves: does each ingredient have a specific reason for being there?

A short and thoughtful formula can be much more interesting than a long list of ingredients added solely to impress.

5. Read the entire list of ingredients

This is probably our most important advice, and it does not only concern collagen:

Turn the container over.

Look at what you are really taking every day.

How much collagen?

What source?

In what form?

With what other ingredients?

How much sugar?

What sweeteners, flavorings, or fillers have been added?

Marketing is often found on the front. The formula, however, is found on the back.

6. Do not look for a miracle promise

Collagen is not something you do once.

Like many habits related to nutrition and wellness, consistency is what matters.

Clinical trials generally evaluate the results after several weeks of supplementation, not after a few days.

You should therefore choose a formula that you will really want to incorporate into your daily routine.

7. And what about Maison Jacynthe Beauty Collagen?

When we created ours, we wanted to bring together these criteria in a simple daily routine.

Our formula provides 10 g of hydrolyzed marine collagen peptides per serving, to which we chose to add 120 mg of hyaluronic acid.

Sugar-free.

A formula designed first for what it contains and for the amounts it provides.

Because beyond the word collagen written on a container, it is the details of the formula that make all the difference.

In summary

To choose your collagen, check:

  • that it is hydrolyzed collagen / collagen peptides;
  • the actual amount per serving;
  • its source;
  • the ingredients that accompany it and their amount;
  • the presence of sugar and superfluous ingredients;
  • and above all, the transparency of the formula.

Not all collagens are alike. Learning to read what they contain allows you to truly compare them.
