Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for their neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. They have been shown to increase learning, memory, cognitive well-being, and blood flow in the brain. A recent meta-analysis of 40 randomized controlled trials found that high doses of EPA/DHA were more effective than existing pharmacological interventions and prophylactic treatment for migraines, and resulted in the greatest reduction in migraine frequency and severity. 1
Another study showed that taking omega-3 fatty acids was associated with a significant increase in serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), compared to a placebo group. Other research has shown that omega-3 supplementation (along with separate vitamin D supplementation) reduced the risk of autoimmune diseases. In this study, participants took omega-3s for five years, but the risk reduction was still present two years after supplementation stopped. 3

She recommends a total of 1,000 mg of EPA plus DHA (add the two together) for young children, 2,000 mg for adolescents, and 1,500 mg for those in between. There should be 1.5 to 2 times more EPA than DHA.
How long will it take to see results after starting a supplement? According to the pediatrician, it varies depending on the supplement and the child. Some families have reported seeing improvement within a few days of starting fish oil; other families have seen no improvement after a month. Here, an observational study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin and mineral supplementation in 45 adolescents, exposed to arsenic in drinking water, who received a daily multivitamin supplement for four weeks. Weekly nutritional status and arsenic levels in urine and drinking water were assessed. Result: Four weeks of vitamin and mineral supplementation improved nutritional status and increased metalloid excretion significantly during the first and second weeks after the intervention . 1

Zinc for ADHD Impulsivity
Some studies have shown that people with ADHD may naturally have lower zinc levels. Taking zinc supplements can reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity, but not inattention. 1

Dr. Sandy Newmark, pediatrician, says:
"Ask your doctor to check your or your child's zinc levels before starting a supplement." If a zinc supplement must be added, Dr. Newmark suggests that children with ADHD take no more than 20 milligrams per day.
Another study demonstrated that zinc, as an adjunct medication, may be beneficial in treating children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, further investigation and different doses of zinc are needed to replicate these findings in children with ADHD. 2
