Kunzea

Kunzea is a tree with small white flowers that can grow up to 2000 meters above sea level, where it covers the ground in abundance, resembling a carpet of snow. 1 This oil, considered a natural treasure in Australia, was named after the German botanist, entomologist and physician Gustav Kunze (1793-1851). This tree, also commonly known as the "tick bush", is said to serve as a refuge for animals to sleep in to protect themselves from biting insects. 2 This oil has multiple indications given its numerous properties: immune stimulant and anti-infectious (antiviral and antibacterial), respiratory decongestant and expectorant, anti-inflammatory, antimycotic, stimulant and tonic, positive, nervous balancing, psychic tonic, soothing, comforting.

Dr. Daniel Pénoël, a French physician and pioneer in medical aromatherapy and science who studies the therapeutic use of essential oils, described the organic composition of Kunzea as very rare; on average, the percentage of alpha-pinene (a powerful antiseptic constituent) in Kunzea oil is higher than that of cineole (a powerful antiviral constituent). He also mentions that the composition of the different constituents in this oil is particularly important for reducing inflammation. 3

Its multiple uses: cutaneous application, massage, oral route, inhalation, diffusion.

Other studies have highlighted the healing effects of black seed oil, particularly on chemo- and radio-induced lesions (linked to certain chemotherapies and radiotherapy) and notably on oral mucositis lesions. 3

The seed possesses a wide variety of compounds including thymoquinone which is considered as its major but not sole bioactive constituent. New developments in nanoparticle-based oral delivery, nasal spray and transdermal delivery may enable the clinical development of N. sativa and thymoquinone as therapeutic agents. This review describes the pharmacological properties of N. sativa and thymoquinone and their potential broad application for a wide variety of human diseases. The article will focus on recent studies on the anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that make N. sativa and thymoquinone promising therapeutic agents targeting contemporary inflammatory and infectious diseases. 4

Compact oregano 1

Very popular in cooking, this oregano! Long ago in Egypt or ancient Rome, it already had its place in perfumery and aromatic care, especially known for its very powerful broad-spectrum anti-infectious activity. Carvacrol, often present at more than 60% in oregano oil, is the compound mainly responsible for its antimicrobial action, an action that thymol, in lesser quantities, will reinforce.

Among its properties, it is considered to be: anti-infectious, immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, antimicrobial. It is used, among other things, for digestive, urinary, gynecological, respiratory, skin infectious disorders and even for certain tropical diseases.

A study conducted in 2021 2 aimed to determine the chemical composition and inhibitory effects of Oregano compact and Peppermint L. (Lamiaceae) essential oils alone or in combination against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. This is the first time that a combination of these two essential oils has been reported to combat foodborne pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The main constituents of Oregano compact essential oil were determined to be carvacrol, thymol, p-cymene, and -terpinene, and for Peppermint essential oil, menthofuran, menthol, methyl acetate, 1,8 cineole, and -pinene were the main compounds. The essential oil mixture exhibited a strong synergistic effect against E. coli. It was concluded that a mixture of essential oils provides a better antimicrobial effect against the bacteria tested than that of essential oils alone.

Due to its irritating nature, it is strongly recommended and absolutely necessary to dilute it in a vegetable oil, otherwise you may experience a very unpleasant sensation of irritation, or even burning.

Patchouli 1

An essential oil with a herbaceous, woody, intense and unique scent! Patchouli arrived in England and France in the 19th century thanks to the success of cashmere shawls that were imported from Asia and transported and protected from moths during the journey because they were well wrapped in patchouli leaves. Adopted by hippies during the 70s, this fragrance continues to seduce from one era to the next!

Among its various properties: Well-being side: nervous stimulant, balancing, Health side: venous and lymphatic tonic and decongestant, anti-inflammatory and skin regenerating, digestive stimulant. This oil is used cutaneously, respiratory tract, internally.

According to a study published in 2007 , regular massages with patchouli essential oil (accompanied by relaxing music) could significantly reduce occupational stress, particularly among nurses in the emergency department. Two 12-week alternative therapy sessions were delivered over the course of a year. 86 nurses participated in the study, 39 of whom attended both the summer and winter sessions. The researchers found that 60% of staff—54% in the summer and 65% in the winter—suffered from moderate to extreme anxiety. But this figure dropped to just eight percent, regardless of the season, after staff received 15-minute massages of the shoulders, mid-back, neck, forehead, and scalp. An aromatherapy mist was diffused overhead, and they listened to relaxing music through headphones. What emerged from this study was that providing aromatherapy massage had an immediate and dramatic effect on staff who traditionally suffer from high levels of anxiety due to the nature of their work.

Petit grain bigarade 1

The bitter orange tree is a small tree, 3 to 10 meters tall, thorny, with evergreen leaves, very fragrant flowers, and edible but bitter fruits. Small but great for its many benefits, since the essential oil of petitgrain from which it is extracted (either from the zest, the flowers or the young branches) can be used under a broad spectrum.

Among its properties - Health: antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic, digestive antispasmodic, calming, nervous regulating, healing, regenerative and skin tonic. Well-being: it can be useful for sleep, agitation, anguish, anxiety, overwork since it is rebalancing, calming and soothing. It is preferred for cutaneous, respiratory and internal use.

A single-blind, randomized controlled trial 2 was conducted in 80 patients (randomly divided into 2 groups, 40 in each group, i.e., 1 intervention group and 1 control group) undergoing coronary angiography at Imam Ali Hospital, Kermanshah, Iran, from April to November 2016 to determine the efficacy and safety of Citrus aurantium (Petitgrain) essential oil on anxiety in these patients. Patients in the intervention group inhaled Citrus aurantium essential oil for 15 to 20 minutes approximately 60 minutes before angiography. Following the same procedure, distilled water was used instead of Citrus aurantium in the control group. Anxiety scores, vital signs, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), respiratory rate, and pulse rate were recorded before and 20 minutes after the intervention. In the intervention group, the mean scores of STAI, SBP, DBP, respiratory rate, and pulse rate significantly decreased, while in the control group, neither anxiety scores nor vital signs significantly changed. The conclusion demonstrates that Citrus aurantium essential oil was effective in reducing anxiety and stress levels in patients undergoing coronary angiography.

It's a great idea to try it in diffusion because its fresh, floral and herbaceous scent is very popular with both children and adults!
