Intestine, inflammatory diseases and mental health

Intestin, maladies inflammatoires et santé mentale

Simply because it could help a family, a child.

Without believing in miracle cures or claiming to be healing solutions.

Simply by repeating what was told to me so that you can go and get tools if you need them.

I had exchanged with Évelyne Claessens " Curing autism... it's possible " after having met, by chance, a psychotherapist, doctor in psychology, head of department and consultant in neuropsychology who had diagnosed her autistic child and, months later, withdraw his diagnosis. He had suggested that I get in touch with her, which I did. I relate our exchange briefly in " Vive la détox " (p.29) knowing that it could perhaps help parents, children (and families have told me about it, mission accomplished).

I later met Caroline Roy (from the company Cuisine l'Angélique ) who had experienced much the same story, seeing her child lose his autistic behavior. She created gluten-free products for him that are now making many people happy.

I realize from reading several other testimonies that this phenomenon is quite widespread. But it is rarely discussed. There is no scientific evidence yet.

For her part, a friend whose son had a weak immune system (fatally low blood platelet count) followed her acupuncturist's recommendations, which was to cut out gluten. Thanks to this change in their diet, she was able to see her son regain his balance.

This summer, a pharmacist whose objectivity, perspective and openness I appreciate, reported that the first medicine is food and that, moreover, if you want beautiful skin, keeping your intestines clean is a priority.

Then a doctor whose motivation I appreciate wrote me a message: "The science of the microbiota will, in my opinion, revolutionize the impact of our diet on our health. The report in Découverte (September 27, 2015) explains the latest breakthroughs in this area well."

Jacqueline Lagacé also reminded me of her argument when a "scientific" journalist tried to come back to the absence of scientific studies on "gluten-free"... while more and more studies, and Ms. Lagacé names the sources, are accessible.

I smile when I read " The Discreet Charm of the Intestine " and its author, who doesn't understand, after having treated herself for numerous disorders (cutaneous, digestive) decides to undertake medical studies and realizes that we don't say what we still know, we wait for more proof...

This morning I heard Nathalie Champoux, author of the book " Being and no longer being autistic ," on Isabelle Maréchal's show, and I took notes while enjoying myself. I can't wait to talk about it! What Nathalie Champoux says right away is that while it's not for all children, for all cases of autism (each person is unique, and so is each healing process), trying a gluten-free and dairy-free diet is not at all dangerous. Especially when you can see lives changed for the better.

Nathalie Champoux, in order to help her two sons, therefore tried a gluten-free and dairy-free diet ( be careful, 80% of purchased foods can contain them, from spices to body creams, shampoo, etc. ) by turning to natural, healthy, less processed, genetically modified products, eliminating stabilizers, pesticides, colorings, etc.

She continues her testimony by saying that barely 3 days into this new diet and her youngest smiles, babbles, which he no longer did; his stomach deflates, the constipation disappears. After a week, the oldest connects, for the first time, with other children, even being able to go to the playroom without his mother. The author also mentions the same report from the Découverte program cited above in which the link between gastrointestinal health and the brain is made. While in " Québec Science ", just like Giulia Anders (" Discreet Charm of the Intestine "), the link is drawn between the intestine, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases and mental health. We could also read " The Grain Brain " if we wanted to browse pages on the impact of ingesting grains such as wheat, for example.

Nathalie concludes by mentioning that it is not enough to eliminate the aggressors of the intestine; we must also look at what the scientific model calls the leaky gut (tight junctions (among others) that increase the permeability of the small intestine and promote the enterohepatic recirculation of particles that in a healthy intestine would be excreted...), we must also repair the leaking intestine, treat inflammation and regenerate (often cases of autism are accompanied by heavy metal poisoning, among other things because of mercury, aluminum, iron supplements, plastic that surrounds us and that we ingest too often...); we must remove them. As for fears of lacking calcium or other things, she would like to dispel the myths: the calcium in vegetables and seeds is superbly assimilated. And humans survived and evolved for 200,000 years only with breast milk.

For my part, and once again, I am not seeking controversy at all; I am simply, very humbly, relating various testimonies and various sources of the most plausible (none of which is my own!). No one can deny, however, that diet is the basis of health, but there is still a lot of science to be done before proving everything, even if clinically we observe results.

Caroline wrote following the publication of this text: " I believe from the bottom of my heart that the goal is not to create false hopes but rather to propose possible solutions that can, for some, be greatly beneficial. Each child, each cause, each situation is unique. And it is true that sometimes, we cannot change what is. My first child died at the age of 21 months from a heart condition, I could only accompany him in his illness, giving thanks for having received exceptional support and care with Ste-Justine until the end... My third, he presented several autistic symptoms and nervous disorders. He was referred to child psychiatry. And our story has a happy ending, since we were lucky enough to be guided towards people who offered us alternative avenues that we decided to explore. Among these avenues, of course, was the exclusion of gluten and dairy products. And many of the approaches also covered in the book Nathalie Champoux. For us, for him, it was beneficial and he is doing wonderfully today. In our case, fortunately, his symptoms were not of the "genetic" type. Genetic autism is not very common, but nevertheless, recessive autism is now reaching a near epidemic rate. The cause of this type of autism is multifactorial, but diet can often be one of the many factors in this condition. More and more research is focusing on this phenomenon (Dohan, Reichelt, Shattock, Cade etc.) where gluten and casein peptides are detected in the urine of autistic children. An imbalance in their intestinal flora would explain why proteins like gluten and casein are not digested correctly in many of these children. A gluten-free and casein-free diet therefore often brings great improvements in autistic children.

To find out more, see the books by Nathalie Champoux and Évelyne Claessens, Caroline's website , Ms. Lagacé's website , and the interview with Isabelle Maréchal .

Finally, to rejoice, all our recipes are gluten-free and dairy-free & gourmet, tasty, delicious... while all our skin and home products are natural and gluten-free (I didn't think it was necessary to mention that!).
