  • Source of antioxidants
  • Helps maintain/support immune functions
  • Elderberry is traditionally used in Herbal Medicine (as an alterative) to help eliminate accumulated waste products through the kidneys, skin, and mucous membranes, to help relieve symptoms of colds and flu (such as coughs, sore throats, and upper respiratory catarrh), to induce sweating (diaphoretic), and to help relieve fever (in cases of colds or flu).

A few words and studies concerning...

Astragalus ( Astragalus membranaceus ), adaptogenic, toning & anti-aging plant

Certain medicinal plants have been used since ancient times to combat aging, including astragalus, a tonic adaptogenic herb that is among the most important in traditional Chinese medicine.

The main components of astragalus are polysaccharides, flavonoids, and saponins. Pharmacological research indicates that the component extracted from astragalus can increase telomerase activity and has effects:

  • Antioxidants
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Immunoregulators
  • Anticancer
  • Hypolipidemic
  • Antihyperglycemics
  • Hepatoprotectors
  • Expectorants
  • Diuretics

Astragalus contains a molecule called cycloastragenol which stimulates an enzyme, telomerase, capable of interrupting and reversing the aging process of cells. 1

A number of studies have shown that telomerase activation can maintain telomere length, delay aging, and reverse age-related tissue degeneration. 2,3

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 117 relatively healthy cytomegalovirus-positive subjects aged 53 to 87 years found that cycloastragenol can lengthen telomeres. 4

Another study of 7,000 people over a 5-year period found that cycloastragenol improved markers of metabolic, bone, and cardiovascular health, with no adverse effects, suggesting that cycloastragenol improves health and may reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality. 5

Dietary cycloastragenol supplementation in female mice has been found to improve some health indicators, including glucose tolerance, osteoporosis, and skin health, without significantly increasing the overall incidence of cancer. 6

Based on the studies, astragalus would show good potential for wide application in aging and aging-related diseases.

…and elderberries ( Sambucus canadensis ), both small but powerful antioxidants!

Well known for centuries for their highly valued nutritional and medicinal properties.

Elderberries demonstrate antibacterial and antiviral activities. They are supportive agents against colds and flu. 1

For example, a clinical trial demonstrated that elderberry supplementation reduced the duration and symptoms of the common cold in air travelers, particularly through its beneficial effects of its physical, particularly respiratory, and mental properties. 2,3

It is also granted these properties:

  • Antioxidant 4
  • Antidiabetic 5
  • Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory 6
  • Antidepressant 7

A real little treasure filled with well-being!

Baker's yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) a great tool!

Baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a single-celled fungus) has long been known for its fermentation properties, used in baking, brewing, and winemaking. Most nutritional yeasts are produced from this yeast.

Today, it is also used as a unique probiotic to promote gut health, as well as for a variety of other applications. 1

In a comparative study, several researches are cited concerning its usefulness in several fields: 2

  • Aging 3
  • Regulation of gene expression 4
  • Signal transduction 5
  • The cell cycle 6
  • Metabolism 7.8
  • Apoptosis 9
  • Neurodegenerative disorders. 10,11

This yeast is undoubtedly very interesting on several levels.

Arabinogalactan, documented effects

  • Improves intestinal flora (prebiotic effect) by increasing the concentration of beneficial Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. 1
  • Improves several functional aspects of the immune system: Activates the phagocytosis of macrophages and stimulates the effectiveness of the natural killer cells (NK) of the immune system. It therefore has an immunostimulating effect in addition to its prebiotic effect. 2
  • Measurable reduction in the level of toxins in the intestine (fecal ammonia) therefore improvement of intestinal ecology. 3
  • Food safety. Recognized as dietary fiber by the US FDA (up to 30g per day without problems or adverse effects). Its only possible side effect is a slight bloating in 3% of high-dose users. 4

Zinc, a support for immunity

As early as the 1960s, the discovery of zinc deficiency highlighted the importance of zinc in the immune system. Over the past few decades, numerous studies have been conducted to influence the progression of various diseases by providing zinc supplementation. 1

Here, a review aimed to summarize the respective findings and discuss the possible molecular mechanisms by which zinc could influence viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections, autoimmune diseases, and the response to vaccination. It appears that zinc supplementation has been shown to be beneficial in diseases such as diarrhea, chronic hepatitis C, shigellosis, leprosy, tuberculosis, pneumonia, acute lower respiratory tract infections, and leishmaniasis (a parasitic disease). 2
