ADAPTOGENS: Libido Formula, Menopause Formula, Mushrooms & Adaptogens

Doris B.: Can we take adaptogens if we take syntroids?

Some adaptogenic herbs can influence thyroid hormone production. This is particularly the case with ashwagandha and Asian ginseng. In this context, there is a risk that the effect of Syntroid may be potentiated (increased), which could cause agitation, insomnia, heart palpitations, excessive weight loss, and sweating. If you wish to use adaptogenic herbs with your Syntroid treatment, you should carefully monitor your blood thyroid hormone levels and be accompanied by a doctor or endocrinologist, as there will likely be a need to adjust the medication dose accordingly.

MJ Customer - A customer who wrote to us about the Libido formula: "I just wanted to know about the libido product because I had breast cancer 5 years ago and I can't take any product that affects hormones. We can indeed read references (not on the mj site) concerning plants such as damiana and fenugreek which invites caution."

It is imperative to discuss with an oncologist or endocrinologist if you wish to take the Libido formula if you have suffered from breast cancer, as there are several factors to consider. First, not all breast cancers are sensitive to hormones. In the case of hormone-dependent breast cancers, great caution is required because damiana and fenugreek contain substances (phytoestrogens in the case of fenugreek) that can actually act on certain female hormone receptors and thus increase the risk of recurrence or progression of the cancer.

Chantal Loiseau: I was taking Libido, which I really liked, and I wanted to add Menopause. However, they are contraindicated with antidepressants. Is this really the case?

It is especially the Asian ginseng present in the Menopause formula that can interact with antidepressants, particularly those in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. Both ginseng and SSRIs can increase serotonin in the brain and this can cause side effects such as restlessness, insomnia, irritability, palpitations, anxiety and even tremors. At high doses, there can be a dangerous serotonin syndrome which is characterized by sweating, confusion, tachycardia (increased heart rate) and tremors.

Interactions between Asian ginseng (as well as rhodiola) and older antidepressants of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor class can be quite serious, as there is a risk of severe hypertension.

Val Bab: Would you please ask Dr. Haddad if there are any interactions between the products offered this week and antidepressants (serotin reuptake inhibitors). I know, for example, that there are interactions with certain NHPs, including St. John's Wort.

Products containing certain adaptogens such as Asian ginseng, rhodiola, and ashwagandha can actually have adverse effects when combined with antidepressants of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. Some adaptogens and SSRIs can both increase serotonin in the brain, and this can cause side effects such as restlessness, insomnia, irritability, palpitations, anxiety, and even tremors. At high doses, a dangerous serotonin syndrome can occur, which is characterized by sweating, confusion, tachycardia (increased heart rate), and tremors. In the case of ashwagandha, there may be an increased effect of drowsiness and fatigue.

Interactions between Asian ginseng (as well as rhodiola) and older antidepressants of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor class can be quite serious, as there is a risk of severe hypertension.

Sandra Kila: Can you treat menopause and libido even if you're taking hormone therapy?

In the case of the Menopause product, the combination of herbs used to reduce menopause symptoms does so without having estrogenic effects. In principle, there should be no problem consuming the product if a person is also being treated with hormone therapy. For the Libido product, it's more complicated because damiana and fenugreek can have estrogenic effects that could be added to those of hormone therapy. In both cases, it would be advisable to consult and be accompanied by a healthcare professional.

Linda Gagné: I had a total hysterectomy at the age of 36 due to very severe endometriosis. Would the menopause formula be helpful for me? I no longer take hormones, and thank you so much for your time.

This is a complex issue that requires consultation with a healthcare professional. Normally, a hysterectomy involves the complete or partial removal of the uterus (and sometimes even the cervix), but leaves the ovaries and fallopian tubes intact. It is the ovaries that produce female hormones and are therefore responsible for menopause when their function declines with age. If the ovaries have also been removed, this is called surgical menopause, and consideration should be given to hormone replacement therapy or alternative approaches. In both cases, the Menopause formula can be helpful if the person is suffering from menopausal symptoms. It is also worth noting that the herbs in the formula help reduce menopausal symptoms without having estrogenic effects.

Sonia Brodeur: Should we stop taking the menopause formula once we're officially in menopause? Or is it better to continue? Thank you.

The Menopause formula contains herbs that help manage menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, nervousness, fatigue, and vaginal dryness. So, it might actually be a good product for you, especially if you're "officially" menopausal!

CONTRAINDICATIONS CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

Annie Bouthillette: What should we think about the warning to avoid Gestox in case of high blood pressure? I have a bit of high blood pressure and varicose vein problems, so I was very interested in Gestox.

MJ Gestox is contraindicated if you suffer from heart disease, high or low blood pressure, kidney or liver disorders, diabetes, or edema (swelling of the hands, face, or feet), or if you are taking products containing diuretics. Indeed, Gestox contains dandelion and nettle, two plants known for their diuretic effects. Diuretics cause urination, which can reduce blood volume and thus affect blood pressure. This explains some of the contraindications.

Gestox also contains horse chestnut, a medicinal plant that promotes lymph circulation, which helps to move toxins out of the tissues for elimination by the kidneys or liver. Horse chestnut also appears to improve venous return and is therefore indicated for venous insufficiency (heavy legs). However, this is not a product that has been formulated for long-term treatment for heavy legs or varicose veins. MJ is currently considering formulating another blend that would more specifically target venous insufficiency problems, and which could be taken over the longer term.

ELECTROLYTES

Lynda Parent: If you have high blood pressure and need to be careful with salt, is it okay to take Mineral Drops without raising your blood pressure? I drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day.

Johanne Chicoine: Electrolytes, yes or no for hypertension?

According to Health Canada and the Canadian Hypertension Society (Hypertension Canada), if you have high blood pressure, you should limit your sodium intake to 2300 mg per day, which is the equivalent of one teaspoon of table salt, but from ALL sources (food and supplements). MJ Electrolytes/Mineral Drop provides 125 mg of sodium per dose (approximately 1.5 mL) and is therefore not a very significant source of sodium. Obviously, this will depend on your total sodium intake from both food sources and supplements consumed per day.

Manon Carufel: Can electrolytes help knee and joint pain?

In principle and at first glance, there does not seem to be any reason to believe that MJ's Electrolytes/Mineral Drop product could be useful in the case of joint pain.

Mamina Mamina: Is electrolyte harmful to the liver and gallbladder?

No, MJ Electrolytes/Mineral Drop is not expected to have any adverse effects on the liver or gallbladder.

Vicky Loiselle: Could electrolytes help with symptoms of low blood pressure...especially in the summer?

It's important to stay hydrated when you're suffering from low blood pressure, especially in the summer, as the risk of dehydration increases with the heat. However, it's also important to drink water containing electrolytes to maintain a healthy fluid balance in the body.

FIBROMYALGIA

Monique P.: I would really like Pierre Haddad to talk to us about fibromyalgia, I've suffered from it for so many years.

Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic disease characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive impairment (nicknamed fibro fog), and increased sensitivity to pressure. The disease is still poorly understood but involves an imbalance in pain sensation, with excitatory pathways increasing and those inhibiting pain decreasing. The so-called hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is also unbalanced, with lower or poorly controlled cortisol. In terms of sleep, it is the deep sleep stage N3 that is affected and thus reduces recovery (therefore implicated in chronic fatigue). There is low-grade inflammation as in several chronic diseases, but no real indication that it is a "classic" autoimmune disease. Psychological and environmental factors play an important role, either as a trigger (intense stress, significant physical or emotional trauma) or as an aggravating agent (anxiety, depression).

International guidelines prioritize pharmacotherapy, primarily antidepressants (e.g., tricyclics and SSRIs) or anticonvulsants (e.g., those that help with neuropathic pain, such as pregabalin). Conventional painkillers such as acetaminophen are not very effective, and opioids should be avoided due to addiction. Instead, the standards advocate an individualized approach based on a variety of interventions. These interventions include moderate exercise (e.g., yoga, tai chi), psychotherapy (especially cognitive behavioral therapy), mind-body approaches (mindfulness meditation, biofeedback, hypnosis), and acupuncture. Healthy eating habits are very helpful, especially by reducing carbohydrates, caffeine, and inflammatory foods (processed foods). Supplements have also been shown to have beneficial effects. Consider correcting deficiencies such as magnesium, vitamin D, vitamins B9 and B12. L-carnitine and coenzyme Q10 help with energy levels and pain. Additionally, melatonin and calming herbs such as valerian and passionflower can reduce anxiety and promote better sleep. Some adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha, rhodiola rosea, and Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) have shown beneficial effects. Finally, turmeric may be helpful as it is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory herbs.

FOCUS

Mj Cossette: Is there a best time to take Focus? Would taking it at bedtime be okay?

There are several components in MJ Focus that promote alertness and attention, such as Siberian ginseng (Eleuterococcus senticosus) and citicoline. Therefore, it seems more appropriate to consume this natural health product early in the day rather than at bedtime.

Ginette Lamoureux: Can we take Focus with high blood pressure medication and Syntroid?

As indicated in the warnings and contraindications on the MJ Focus product label, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for proper support if you wish to consume the MJ Focus product and you suffer from hypertension. The risks are generally lower if the hypertension is well controlled. As for the drug synthroid, there is a theoretical risk of interaction with Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus). The latter is an adaptogenic plant that stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and could, in theory, increase the action of synthroid. If the person is well balanced, the risks are lower, but it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for proper support if you wish to combine the drug and the MJ Focus product.

Ginette Therrien: When you have glaucoma, can you take Focus?

In principle, the MJ Focus product does not contain any component that would increase intraocular pressure, but it is advisable to consult a health professional for proper support.

Marielle Boucher: Are Focus and Donepezil compatible? Or should they be avoided together, as I've been taking Donepezil for over a year. Thank you.

Donepezil is a medication that inhibits acetylcholinesterase and thus helps maintain acetylcholine levels in the brain to slow cognitive decline. MJ Focus should not interfere with Donepezil, but rather complement it. There is a component, citicoline, that could, in principle, enhance acetylcholine synthesis and therefore enhance the action of Donepezil. However, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for proper guidance if you wish to combine the medication and MJ Focus.

Francyne Couillard: Can I take Focus if I take Metformin?

MJ Focus contains Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), an adaptogenic herb that may influence metabolism and potentially increase the effect of metformin. MJ Focus can generally be used with metformin, but it is important to monitor blood sugar levels carefully and be on the lookout for symptoms of hypoglycemia (tremors, excessive sweating, palpitations, anxiety, sudden hunger, pallor, nausea). It is strongly recommended that you consult a healthcare professional for guidance if you wish to combine the medication with MJ Focus.

LIVER/GALLBLADDER

Lauréanne Goulet: Can we take detox if we no longer have a gallbladder?

The gallbladder serves to store and concentrate bile for expulsion into the intestines, particularly in response to a high-fat meal. Bile actually serves to emulsify fats (make them water-soluble—much like soap) so they are better digested. When a person no longer has a gallbladder, bile simply flows continuously into the intestine. The "flushing" ability that gallbladder contraction brings about when it is present is lost.

Gallstones or "liver stones" also often form in the gallbladder. These can sometimes lodge in the bile duct and cause a "liver attack." This is why natural health products that promote bile flow (for example, turmeric or dandelion root) come with a precautionary statement if you suffer from liver stones. Indeed, promoting bile flow can encourage stones to lodge in the bile duct or increase the pressure in the bile duct if a stone is already lodged there.

MJ Detox contains turmeric and dandelion root, and is therefore subject to the precautionary advice for people suffering from liver stones. As mentioned, gallstones often form in the gallbladder; therefore, if a person no longer has a gallbladder, the risk of gallstones decreases and consumption of MJ Detox should be safe. However, gallstones can rarely form inside the liver, so it is advisable to discuss this with your doctor or healthcare professional before taking MJ Detox, if this is the case.

Carole D'Anjou: Can I add a 7-day Detox when I no longer have a gallbladder?

See response to Lauréanne Goulet above.

Annie Miller: When there is a warning on a natural product stating not to use if the person has gallstones (gallbladder stones). If a person has had their gallbladder removed for this reason, does the warning apply (even if the person no longer has a gallbladder)? Thank you!

See response to Lauréanne Goulet above.

Johanne Vigneault: If you no longer have a gallbladder, what should you take?

See response to Lauréanne Goulet above.

Pierrette Godin: I no longer have a gallbladder, can I take the Detox?

See the response to Lauréanne Goulet above.

Céline Langevin: Gallstones without symptoms. Can you take Detox or Gestox?

The gallbladder serves to store and concentrate bile for expulsion into the intestines, particularly in response to a high-fat meal. Bile actually serves to emulsify fats (make them water-soluble—much like soap) so they are easier to digest.

It is also often in the gallbladder that gallstones or "liver stones" form. These can sometimes lodge in the bile duct and cause a "liver attack." This is why natural health products that promote bile flow (for example, turmeric or dandelion root) come with a precautionary statement if you suffer from liver stones (even without symptoms). Indeed, promoting bile flow can encourage stones to lodge in the bile duct or increase the pressure in the bile duct if a stone is already lodged there.

MJ Détox and MJ Gestox products contain plants that promote the flow of bile and are therefore subject to the precautionary advice for people suffering from liver stones.

Carole D'Anjou: Could there be a contraindication to taking adaptogens, Gestox, and Liver Detox if taking Olaparib and the gallbladder has been removed? Thank you for the answer.

Olaparib is an anticancer drug used primarily for ovarian, breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. Its significant side effects include a decrease in red blood cells (anemia) and platelets (risk of bleeding), as well as gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite), fatigue, and muscle and joint pain.

This is a clinical situation beyond my knowledge, and I strongly recommend consulting a healthcare professional before consuming natural health products, especially those containing several medicinal plants as is the case with the products mentioned.

Julie R.: Gestox with gallbladder polyps... yes or no? And how are polyps formed?

Gallbladder polyps are abnormal growths within the gallbladder. Fortunately, they are benign in the vast majority of cases. Although the exact causes are still poorly understood, several factors, such as a diet high in fat and cholesterol (which can lead to cholesterol deposits in the gallbladder), inflammation of the gallbladder, metabolic disorders, and genetic predispositions, may contribute. There is no guaranteed way to prevent gallbladder polyps, but adopting a healthy diet and a balanced lifestyle can reduce the risk.

In this context, Gestox should be safe to use, as long as there are no gallstones (liver stones) present. Indeed, Gestox contains milk thistle and dandelion, two medicinal plants that protect the liver and promote bile flow. Health Canada therefore issues a warning for the use of these medicinal plants in the presence of gallstones. It is therefore advisable to consult a qualified health professional if you wish to take Gestox in the presence of gallbladder polyps.

A client from Drummondville asked a slightly more technical question regarding the removal of her gallbladder. She does not assimilate any fat. She was wondering if there was a supplement that helps with its absorption (fat) because she is lacking a little energy. She has gained weight and her skin seems less beautiful since the removal of her gallbladder. She no longer has bile. When she eats, for example, homemade poutine, she is unable to digest it.

The client should consult a health specialist such as a gastroenterologist. It appears that her liver is not producing enough bile, which could explain the difficulty digesting a high-fat meal. There are herbs, such as turmeric, milk thistle, and other so-called liver herbs, that help the liver produce bile. There is also ursodeoxycholic acid, which can partially replace endogenous bile acids and may aid in the digestion of a fatty meal. The Detox product contains this element as well as several liver herbs that are beneficial in this context.

Annie Miller: If there have been gallstones in the gallbladder and the gallbladder has been removed, should the gallstone warning be considered?

In principle, no. The gallbladder serves to store and concentrate bile for expulsion into the intestines, particularly in response to a high-fat meal. Bile actually serves to emulsify fats (make them water-soluble—a bit like soap) so they are better digested. When a person no longer has a gallbladder, bile simply flows continuously into the intestine. The ability to "flush" bile, which is brought about by the contraction of the gallbladder when it is present, is lost.

The gallbladder is also often where gallstones or "liver stones" form. These can sometimes lodge in the bile duct and cause a "liver attack." This is why natural health products that promote bile flow (for example, milk thistle, turmeric, or dandelion root) come with a precautionary statement if you have liver stones. This is because promoting bile flow can encourage stones to lodge in the bile duct, or increase pressure in the bile duct if a stone is already lodged there.

MJ Détox, Gestox, and Metabzen products contain milk thistle, turmeric, and/or dandelion root. They are therefore subject to the precautionary notice for people suffering from liver stones. As mentioned, gallstones often form in the gallbladder; therefore, if a person no longer has a gallbladder, the risk of gallstones decreases, and consumption of the products mentioned above should be safe. However, gallstones rarely form inside the liver, and it is therefore advisable to discuss these products with your doctor or healthcare professional before taking them if this is the case.

Diane Morin: For several years, I have been told that I have a lazy liver, what should I take and I often have problems with my digestion?

The sequence of MJ Détox (1 week), Gestox (3 weeks) and Metabzen (longer term thereafter) products could help someone suffering from the digestive disorders you describe.

Bastarache Nathalie: If we have fatty liver, can we take Detox and Gestox?

Both MJ Détox and Gestox contain herbs that target liver disorders. They are therefore effectively indicated for fatty liver disease, particularly through the hepatoprotective effects of milk thistle.

Sonia Gosselin: Are there any liver diseases for which Detox should not be used? Fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis? Or can it only do good?

The MJ Detox product specifically targets liver function and health, particularly through the presence of plants and components that protect the liver and promote bile production. These effects should in principle be beneficial for benign liver diseases such as fatty liver (hepatic steatosis). However, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist or hepatologist for advice, particularly in the case of more serious liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Sealou Sealou: If we have a liver tumor that is still present after radiotherapy, can we take Detox or Gestox? As maintenance... or to help the liver do its job a little?

The MJ Détox product specifically targets liver function and health, particularly through the presence of plants and components that protect the liver and promote bile production. The MJ Gestox product also contains two liver plants. Their effects should in principle be beneficial for benign liver diseases such as fatty liver (steatosis). However, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist or hepatologist for advice, particularly in the case of more serious liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer.

Sonia Gosselin: Would there be a contraindication in cases of fatty liver, hepatitis B and cirrhosis with regard to taking Detox?

The conditions described (fatty liver, hepatitis B and cirrhosis) are serious clinical situations. It is advisable to consult a hepatologist (liver specialist) before considering taking the Detox product.

GESTOX AND HORMONES OR FEMALE CANCERS

Julie Robert Illuminailes: I'm worried about taking Gestox because the contraindications state that it should not be taken if you have a history of cancer... could you tell me more about that please?

Gestox contains red clover isoflavones. These components are considered phytoestrogens; that is, molecules that act in the body like certain female hormones. The contraindications that Health Canada requires to be placed on the label of products containing such phytoestrogens are related to the fact that certain cancers (for example, breast cancer) are accentuated by the presence of hormones such as estrogen. Since phytoestrogens can partially mimic the effect of estrogen, it is therefore preferable to avoid them if you suffer from such cancer or if there is a history of such cancers in the family.

Sandra Kila: Why not take Gestox when taking hormone therapy?

Gestox contains red clover isoflavones. These compounds are considered phytoestrogens; molecules that act in the body like certain female hormones. Their effects could therefore be additive to those of hormone therapy, hence the contraindication prescribed by Health Canada for this type of product.

Boucher Victoria Isabelle: Why is Gestox not recommended if you have a history of breast cancer? Thank you.

Yanik Racicot: Can't you take Gestox if you're taking bioidentical hormones? I'm taking Estrogel, is that not recommended?

Gestox contains red clover isoflavones. These compounds are considered phytoestrogens; molecules that act in the body like certain female hormones. Their effects could therefore be additive to those of hormone therapy, hence the contraindication prescribed by Health Canada for this type of product.

Guylaine Tremblay: Can you take Gestox when you're taking Estrogel as a hormone and if you have breast dysplasia?

Gestox contains red clover isoflavones. These compounds are considered phytoestrogens; molecules that act in the body like certain female hormones. Their effects could therefore be additive to those of hormone therapy, hence the contraindication prescribed by Health Canada for this type of product.

Lucille Masse: For Gestox, if we have hormonal patches, can we take it?

Gestox contains red clover isoflavones. These compounds are considered phytoestrogens; molecules that act in the body like certain female hormones. Their effects could therefore be additive to those of hormone therapy, hence the contraindication prescribed by Health Canada for this type of product. It would therefore be preferable to avoid combining hormonal patches with Gestox unless otherwise advised by your healthcare professional.

GESTOX AND HEAVY LEGS

Val É Rie Desj: If I take Gestox for heavy legs and I see a clear improvement at 1 co/48 h as maintenance, can I continue it long term or do I have to respect the 3 weeks (even if my dosage is reduced)?

MJ Gestox contains horse chestnut, a medicinal plant that promotes lymph circulation, which helps flush toxins out of the tissues for elimination by the kidneys or liver. Horse chestnut also appears to improve venous return and is therefore indicated for venous insufficiency (heavy legs). However, this is not a product formulated for long-term treatment of heavy legs or varicose veins. MJ is currently considering formulating another blend that would more specifically target venous insufficiency problems and could be taken over the longer term.

Louise Gagné: I would like to know the impact of Gestox on varicose veins. I read the information on the website, and depending on certain issues, it may be suggested to take it for a longer term. Is this the case for deep varicose veins and what would be the dosage and duration? Thank you.

Annie D'Amours: Is it possible to take Gestox if you have had a leg bypass and angioplasty a year later?

Leg bypass surgery and angioplasty are procedures commonly performed to treat narrowed or blocked arteries that cause blood flow problems. These problems can have several causes, including atherosclerosis (fatty deposits that narrow the arteries).

The MJ Gestox product contains horse chestnut, a medicinal plant that improves lymph circulation and venous return and is therefore indicated for problems of venous insufficiency (heavy legs). It is therefore advisable to consult a health professional to find out whether this improvement in venous return can have a beneficial effect on your condition or, on the contrary, aggravate it.

France F.: Can you take Gextox if you have circulation problems in your legs due to osteoarthritis in your feet?

The Gestox product contains horse chestnut and red clover, two plants used as lymphatic depuratives in traditional Western herbalism. These plants therefore promote lymph circulation. Horse chestnut is also recognized by Health Canada for its ability to improve venous insufficiency, which is associated with the phenomenon of "heavy legs." In this context, the Gestox product should, in principle, be able to help improve venous circulation in the presented context. However, the product is not formulated to manage long-term circulatory problems. It is therefore advisable to seek the advice and follow-up of a qualified health professional.

MCT OIL AND HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA

Nathalie Lafleur: Does that mean that people with high cholesterol can take this version of MCT oil? Even if I have familial hypercholesterolemia and am on medication? Are you saying that MJ's MCT oil is short-chain and not medium-chain?

MJ's MCT oil is derived from coconut oil and is enriched with carpic acid (40%) and octanoic acid (60%), both of which are medium-chain fatty acids. These are saturated fats and are generally not recommended for people with high cholesterol. Medium-chain saturated fats are thought to be less risky than long-chain saturated fats, but you should discuss this with a healthcare professional before using it if you have familial hypercholesterolemia.

VEGETABLE OILS AND GOOD FATS

Genevieve Bauset: Coconut oil is saturated fat. Is it good?
Chantal Blais: Is canola oil good or bad? Camelina oil yes or no?
Pascale D'Aoust: It seems that linseed oil is among the best, is that true?
Nathalie Martin: Which oil is better for your health: argan oil, olive oil, or MCT oil?
Val É Rie Desj: What is the best oil, according to studies, for heart disease prevention and blood pressure? What are the benefits of avocado oil?

Extra virgin olive oil is definitely the most studied vegetable oil and therefore the benefits on the cardiovascular system and metabolism are the best documented.
In general, you should favor oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids and low in saturated fatty acids. These include extra virgin olive oil, argan oil, avocado oil, and walnut oil. There are also flaxseed, camelina, and rapeseed/canola oils, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and may also have benefits for cardiometabolic health. However, omega-3s in vegetable oils are less assimilable and therefore less effective than animal oils (oily fish, certain crustaceans, and marine mammals). It should also be noted that some oils must be consumed raw because they degrade easily in the heat; this is the case for walnut and flaxseed oils. In the case of canola oil, cold-pressed oil should be favored rather than the refined version, as the latter is processed at high temperatures and therefore loses its functionality.

Oils high in saturated fatty acids should be consumed in greater moderation, including palm oil and coconut oil. However, for coconut oil, medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil appears to be an exception and has cardiometabolic health benefits. Here too, cold-pressed oils should be preferred over refined oils.

Sunflower oil, on the other hand, is rich in omega-6 and could therefore promote inflammation, unlike oils rich in omega-3.

Nicole Cossette Leduc: Can you take TOO much olive oil? Are there any risks?

Yes, too much of any food, beverage, or supplement can cause adverse effects that often affect the gastrointestinal system. Excessive olive oil, for example, can lead to greasy stools, bloating, intestinal cramps, and diarrhea. Vegetable oils, in general, are also very high in calories, and excessive consumption can lead to weight gain.

Marielle Lemire: Does black cumin oil also have all the benefits of olive and argan oil?

Black seed oil contains approximately 16% saturated fatty acids, a similar ratio to the other two oils. Black seed oil also contains 27% monounsaturated fatty acids and 57% polyunsaturated fatty acids, which is the opposite of the ratio found with olive or argan oil. Black seed oil has also been studied for its cardiometabolic benefits and, yes, shares many of the benefits attributed to olive and argan oils.

Pascale Bernard: It seems that coconut oil or good fats are beneficial for Alzheimer's?

Yes, a few clinical studies conducted over the past ten years in populations suffering from Alzheimer's type dementia have shown an improvement in cognitive functions with daily consumption of extra virgin coconut oil (2-3 tablespoons per day taken over a period of 3 weeks to 2 years).

Johanne Tousignant: Regarding omegas, is it true that if they contain polyphenols, absorption and results would be significant? Do your omegas contain polyphenols?

Typically, products called "omega-3" come from animal sources (oily fish, marine mammal fat, some crustaceans) and do not contain polyphenols, which are instead of plant-based. Polyphenols in vegetable oils add antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are beneficial for cardiometabolic health.

Sonia Bélanger: If you have what we call a slow liver, are good fats also difficult for the liver?

A "sluggish" liver is a term used to describe a liver that is not functioning optimally, and this can lead to digestive problems (bloating, constipation, nausea), a feeling of heaviness (especially after a meal high in fat), chronic fatigue, headaches, and skin problems (acne, eczema). In the case of a sluggish liver, any meal high in fat (good or bad fats) will cause the liver to produce bile, as it is necessary for the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. So, yes, it will be more "difficult" for the liver.

Carolle Cayer: Eat in bulk with Maison Jacynthe vinaigrette, about 7 tablespoons at lunchtime. Of course, it contains apple cider vinegar, Damari, and maple syrup. I also consume 2 tablespoons of almond butter per day. Is that too much fat?

No, what you're describing isn't too much fat, and it seems like good fat too. Enjoy!

MOOD AND SUPPLEMENTS

Omegas:

Several clinical studies have found that the lower a person's omega-3 intake, the greater the risk of depression. This led to several other intervention studies in which omega-3 supplements, especially those enriched with EPA/DHA (EPA/DHA), were administered alone or in combination with antidepressant medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In most cases, the effect of omega-3 alone was modest and did not compare favorably with medications, even at higher doses of omega-3. However, when combined with antidepressant medications, omega-3 significantly enhanced the therapeutic response. Current scientific evidence therefore indicates that omega-3 supplements are useful in combination with antidepressants rather than as first-line treatment. And the effects of omega-3 are probably greater in people who have less of it, which points to a personalized approach.

The importance of B-complex vitamins:

Much the same observation applies to B-complex vitamins, especially vitamins B6, B9 (folate), and B12, which are important for the proper functioning of the nervous system. Studies clearly show that people who are deficient in these vitamins or who have genetic variations that prevent them from using them properly (e.g., methyltetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency) are at greater risk of depression. As with omega-3s, supplementation alone produces modest and variable effects, likely related to variations in baseline vitamin status. In combination with antidepressants, studies have observed modest and variable, but promising, therapeutic improvements, especially with a personalized approach.

What about vitamin D?

The same goes for vitamin D! The more vitamin D deficient a person is, the greater the risk of depression. Clinical intervention studies have shown beneficial effects of high-dose vitamin D (20,000 to 40,000 IU per week; corresponds to approximately 3,000 to 5,500 IU per day), while lower doses (e.g., 400 IU per day) do not. Study results are variable and most likely depend on baseline vitamin D status. Combination with antidepressant medications also produces good results, especially when taking into account baseline vitamin status and higher doses of vitamin D.

INTERACTION/COMBINATION WITH CARDIOVASCULAR DRUGS

Annie Cote: Why can't we take Detox if we are medicated with Rosuvastatin and have high blood pressure?

To my knowledge, there are no contraindications to taking Detox with statins like Rosuvastatin, but I strongly advise you to discuss this with your healthcare professional (pharmacist, doctor, and others) to get their opinion. In theory, statins inhibit cholesterol synthesis, while certain liver-supporting herbs, such as milk thistle and turmeric, present in Detox promote the synthesis of bile acids from the same cholesterol.

The Detox product is contraindicated if you suffer from heart disease, high or low blood pressure, kidney or liver disorders, diabetes, or edema (swelling of the hands, face, or feet), or if you are taking products containing diuretics. Indeed, the Detox product contains dandelion, a plant known for its diuretic effects. Diuretics cause urination, which can reduce blood volume and thus affect blood pressure. This explains some of the contraindications.

Annie Cote: Is detox safe with Perindopril and Rosuvastain? As well as Energy and Adaptogen? Thank you!

Perindopril is an antihypertensive (blood pressure lowering) drug, while Rosuvastatin is a statin prescribed to help lower cholesterol. These drugs reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and their potential consequences (cerebrovascular accident – CVA – and heart attack/infarction).

In the case of the Energy & Adaptogen product, it contains holy basil (Ocimum basilicum) which has a moderate risk of interaction with certain medications such as anticoagulants and oral hypoglycemics, but there is no data regarding statins (Rosuvastatin) and antihypertensives (Perindopril).

Diane Faucher: Can we take fiber with anticoagulants?

Yes, it's okay to take fiber if you're taking blood thinners. However, you should space each medication at least two hours apart because fiber can slow the absorption of the medications, thus affecting their effectiveness.

Nathalie Roussette Turcotte: I take Glucophage twice a day and I'm hesitating between taking Gluconig and Metabzen. Is this contradictory?

Contradictory, no, it would rather be complementary. However, some of the components of Gluconig and Metabzen can act in a similar way to metformin (Glucophageâ) and it would therefore be advisable to carefully monitor your blood sugar levels to avoid them falling too far (hypoglycemia). It is recommended that you inform your doctor of your wish to take these products concomitantly so that he/she can advise you and help you monitor your blood sugar levels.

Gaëtane Laviolette: If I take blood thinning medication after a heart attack, can I take Energy & Adaptogen?

Blood thinning medications, or anticoagulants, are among the medications that must be used with great caution when combined with other medications or natural health products (NHPs). Indeed, another medication or NHP could inhibit the enzymes that break down anticoagulants, and this would increase the active amount and could cause bleeding. Conversely, some other medications or NHPs increase the amount of enzymes that break down anticoagulants. In this case, the amount of anticoagulants could be too low and the risk of blood clots will increase. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before taking other medications or NHPs.

In the case of the Energy & Adaptogen product, it contains holy basil (Ocimum basilicum) which has a moderate risk of interaction with anticoagulants or antiplatelets according to some preclinical studies, but this has not been verified in humans.

Francyne Couillard: Can we Detox and Gestox if we take medication - metformin - high blood pressure - Synthroid - cholesterol...?

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE AND IMMUNOMODULATORY FUNGI

Julie Leblond: Are these immunomodulatory mushrooms recommended for autoimmune diseases?

The answer is mixed. The use of adaptogenic mushrooms is generally not recommended for people with autoimmune diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Hashimoto's disease, Crohn's disease, type 1 diabetes). Risks range from variable to severe, especially if there is an overactive immune system and severe inflammation, as adaptogenic mushrooms could aggravate the situation. However, a potentially beneficial effect may exist in certain conditions and for certain mushrooms such as cordyceps, reishi, or lion's mane. It is strongly recommended to consult a healthcare professional specialized in these diseases to assess the risks versus benefits.

METABZEN AND GLUCONIG

Carole V.: My husband has gout attacks, can Metabzen help? Thank you.

Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood, which is a breakdown product of purines. These are present in many foods such as red meat, organ meats, seafood, certain vegetables (e.g., spinach, asparagus), alcoholic beverages (especially beer and some spirits), and sugary sodas. The liver is the primary site of purine breakdown into uric acid, while its elimination is handled primarily by the kidneys. Gout, itself, is caused by the deposition of sodium urate crystals in the joints, leading to inflammatory arthritis.

In this context, Metabzen does not seem to be the most appropriate product. While it does contain milk thistle, which protects the liver and improves bile secretion, no studies have specifically examined the action of this medicinal plant on hepatic purine metabolism. Similarly, no human studies have evaluated the potentially beneficial effects of milk thistle on the kidneys. In principle, none of the other components of Metabzen directly target purine metabolism or kidney function. The only possible link is that Metabzen improves the body's management of sugars and fats to maintain their balance, thus helping to prevent cardiometabolic disorders. Since high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes are risk factors for gout, better management of sugars and fats with Metabzen should not be harmful. However, it should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.

Francine Brunet: And if we are already taking vitamin D, should we stop?

Vitamin D supplementation is done on a daily or weekly basis depending on the formulation. The Metabzen product contains 500 IU of vitamin D3 per capsule, therefore providing 1000 IU for the maximum daily intake. This exceeds the nutritional intake recommended by Health Canada, which is 600 IU per day for people aged 9 to 69 and 800 IU for people aged 70 and over. However, a daily intake of up to 4000 IU per day represents the tolerable upper intake also issued by Health Canada. Therefore, if the sum of all your supplements containing vitamin D falls within the range of 600 to 4000 IU, you are in the desired range.

Diane B.: Can you tell me about Berberine with green tea to metabolize sugar and fat? Is it comparable in effect to Metabzen?

Berberine is an alkaloid found in several plants that acts similarly to metformin, a medication used to lower blood glucose. It improves insulin sensitivity, leading to better management of sugars and fats. The American ginseng, black cumin, and chromium in Metabzen work in much the same way.

In the case of green tea extracts, they contain catechins, which are polyphenols that also have beneficial effects on sugar and fat metabolism. These extracts not only work to improve insulin sensitivity, but also reduce sugar absorption in the intestine and increase fat burning in adipose tissue. Combined with a healthy, low-calorie diet, green tea extracts can help with weight management. The black seed contained in Gluconig and Metabzen products has shown mixed but encouraging effects in clinical studies regarding weight management. It is therefore possible that these formulas may also help with weight management, especially when adopting healthy lifestyle habits, including reducing carbohydrates in the diet.

Rhéa Delisle-Ferland: Can I take Metabzen at the same time as multivitamins?

Yes, you can take a multivitamin while taking Metabzen. Metabzen contains 500 IU of vitamin D3 per capsule, providing a maximum daily intake of 1000 IU. This exceeds Health Canada's recommended intake of 600 IU per day for people aged 9 to 69 and 800 IU for people aged 70 and over. However, a daily intake of up to 4000 IU per day represents the Tolerable Upper Intake Level, also issued by Health Canada. So, if the sum of all your vitamin D supplements falls within the 600 to 4000 IU range, you're in the right range.

Lee Ann: If I don't have the symptoms you mention, is it okay to take them as prevention?

Yes, Metabzen and Gluconig can be taken as a preventative measure. Indeed, cardiometabolic diseases are often asymptomatic until they are quite advanced. Metabolic syndrome is a precursor to type 2 diabetes and is characterized by the presence of three of the following five conditions:

1. Abdominal obesity:

Waist circumference greater than:
102 cm in men
88 cm for women

2. Hypertriglyceridemia:

Blood triglyceride level ≥ 1.5 g/L (1.7 mmol/L) or treatment for hypertriglyceridemia.
Low HDL cholesterol ("good cholesterol"):
< 0.4 g/L (1.0 mmol/L) in humans
< 0.5 g/L (1.3 mmol/L) in women
Or ongoing treatment for low HDL levels.

3. High blood pressure:

Blood pressure ≥ 130/85 mmHg
Or antihypertensive treatment.

4. Mild fasting hyperglycemia:

Blood glucose ≥ 1.0 g/L (5.6 mmol/L)

These criteria are defined by organizations such as the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the American Heart Association (AHA). If you have three of these five conditions, adopting a healthy lifestyle (physical activity and healthy eating) is recommended, and taking products such as Metabzen and Gluconig may be helpful.

Diane Morin: Can you take Metabzen if you have hypoglycemia?
Odette Fortin: Would Gluconig be interesting for hypoglycemia?

Metabzen contains three ingredients that can help better manage blood glucose: American ginseng, black cumin, and chromium. Gluconig, on the other hand, reduces the digestion and therefore absorption of carbohydrates. These two products can therefore help lower blood sugar levels and should be used with great caution if you already suffer from hypoglycemia. It is strongly recommended to seek the advice and follow-up of a qualified healthcare professional in this context.

Nathalie Fréchette: I wonder if gluconing can help when you have hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a deficiency of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which normally help manage metabolism. This lack of T3 and T4 slows overall metabolism, resulting in decreased glucose production by the liver and reduced glucose uptake by tissues such as muscle and adipose (fat) tissue. The net effect in the body can be a decrease in blood glucose in some patients. Hypothyroidism also slows the breakdown of fats, which can lead to body weight gain. In this context, it does not seem advisable to take Gluconig, which will further reduce the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, which will tend to further lower blood glucose. It is recommended to seek the advice of a healthcare professional before taking Gluconig if you suffer from hypothyroidism.

Mireille Leclerc: How long should we take gluconig? Thank you.

Gluconig should be taken as one capsule 30 minutes before the two main meals of the day. There are no restrictions on using the product over several days, weeks, or even months. Warnings on the label refer to stopping the product if you experience gastrointestinal disturbances or symptoms related to hypoglycemia (for example, feelings of anxiety, dizziness, tremors, sweating, nausea, or headache).

Carmen Blackburn: Do you recommend it for a slow liver?

Carole Doiron: I have slow digestion problems in both my liver and intestines, despite eating fiber and drinking water. Could your products help me?

A "sluggish" liver is a term used to describe a liver that is not functioning optimally, and this can lead to digestive problems (bloating, constipation, nausea), a feeling of heaviness (especially after a fatty meal), chronic fatigue, headaches, and skin problems (acne, eczema). Metabzen can actually help with such a sluggish liver thanks to the milk thistle and turmeric it contains. These two plants protect the liver against toxins and stimulate the production of bile, which will improve digestion.

Gaëtanne Laviolette: I would like to take Metabzen for all its benefits, but if I have to take Asaphen and Metformin every day, can I take Metabzen?

Metabzen contains three ingredients that can help manage blood glucose: American ginseng, black cumin, and chromium. These can help lower blood sugar and should be used with caution if you are also taking the drug Metformin, as their effects can add up and cause hypoglycemia. Concomitant use is possible, but requires the advice and support of a healthcare professional, and regular blood sugar testing is recommended.

Asaphen is a blood thinner usually given in low doses to thin the blood and thus prevent clots. Here too, the advice and support of a healthcare professional is recommended, as there is a low risk of interaction with some of the components contained in Metabzen.

Nathalie Fréchette: If I have high blood pressure, is it okay to take Metabzen?

Monique L. Dionne: Can Metabzen be taken with high blood pressure?

Normally, yes, because the American ginseng and black cumin contained in Metabzen have been shown to have a beneficial effect on blood pressure in several clinical studies. However, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional if you suffer from hypertension and wish to consume this product.

Danielle Parr: Could metabzen help shrink cysts on the liver?

According to the Canadian Liver Foundation: "Cystic liver disease is rare and can take several forms. Cysts (a small growth of fluid that develops in the liver tissue) in the main trunk of the biliary tree are called choledochal cysts. Cysts (lakes) that occur in the small branches of the bile ducts in the liver are called Caroli syndrome. Other cysts in the liver that do not occur in the biliary tree are called polycystic liver disease."

If the cysts are in the bile ducts, it would be wise to avoid taking Metabzen, as the turmeric it contains could worsen symptoms by increasing bile secretion. If the cysts are in the liver itself, Metabzen should be safe, but it would be important to discuss this with a hepatologist (liver specialist).

Lise Roy: I find that I already take a lot of vitamins and supplements, can Metabzen replace some of them?

Besides vitamins D and E, Metabzen does not contain any other vitamins and therefore cannot replace a multivitamin and mineral product, for example. To answer this question, you would need to know all the other supplements you are taking...

Johanne Lachance: Question: How much Metabzen per day for a 65-year-old man with bad cholesterol at 4, no medication for the moment.

The maximum daily dose of Metabzen, two capsules per day, would be recommended in the described case.

Pascale D'Aoust: Does Gluconig help with insulin resistance?

The black cumin contained in the product Gluconig has indeed shown beneficial effects in improving insulin sensitivity and thus could help counter insulin resistance.

Johanne Léveillée: Can we take Gluconig only when we eat a large meal?

Yes, the Gluconig product will help slow down digestion and thus the absorption of carbohydrates, particularly during a large meal.

Sweet Sun: Hello, does metabzen replace probiotics or probiotics?

Several of the components of Metabzen are medicinal plants (American ginseng, black cumin, milk thistle, turmeric) that contain several polyphenols. These have been shown to act as prebiotics and therefore promote the growth of good bacteria in the intestine. However, Metabzen cannot replace fibers such as psyllium or probiotics. These can be taken concomitantly and safely with Metabzen.

Eve Fortin: Can we take Metabzen all the time? … Because I take it every day … since it came out.

Carmen Blackburn: Can you take Metabzen for a long time?

Yes, Metabzen can be taken for a longer period of time. However, it is possible, and sometimes advisable, to take breaks of a few days to a few weeks a few times throughout the year. This is what is recommended, especially in traditional herbal medicine.

Nathalie Cloutier: I know we're not talking about weight loss, but can her formulas help in the process of changing eating and physical habits after 50?

The black seed contained in Gluconig and Metabzen products has shown mixed but encouraging effects in clinical studies regarding body weight management. It is therefore possible that these formulas may aid body weight management, particularly when adopting healthy lifestyle habits, including reducing carbohydrates in the diet.

Line Charette: Hello, I have fatty liver and I no longer have a gallbladder. Can I take Detox or Metabzen, or both?

This question has already been answered, but yes, you can take both Detox and Metabzen products if you have a fatty liver and no gallbladder. However, you should not take both products at the same time. It is suggested to start with a one-week course of Detox. You can continue with three weeks of Gestox, then take Metabzen later and for the longer term.

Cristina: Hello, I would like to know when we can take Metabzen?

Metabzen can be taken with or without food. If the maximum dose of two capsules per day is chosen, these can be taken concurrently or spaced out (for example, one in the morning and one in the evening).

Bibiane Chouinard: Hello Dr., I take medication for blood pressure and also medication for the thyroid gland and vitamin D capsules, Syntroid medication prescribed by the doctor. I had stitches on my right side, I take milk thistle and also camu camu. And I have a fractured vertebra and I have osteoporosis. Tell me if I can take Metabzen? Thank you.

If you are already taking milk thistle, it is not recommended to add Metabzen, as it contains a significant dose of it as well.

Martine Q.: Can taking Metabzen affect a below-normal triglyceride level?

Low triglyceride levels are quite rare, and therefore there are no specific studies on the effect of Metabzen's ingredients on this. However, the liver is the main organ that can synthesize triglycerides. Since Metabzen's ingredients help the body in general, and the liver in particular, to better manage sugars and fats, taking this product should not, in principle, have a negative impact on low triglyceride levels.

Rachele L.: I have controlled high blood pressure, but after meals, I always fall asleep. I'm interested in gluconic acid because of the sugars. But, I read that if you have high blood pressure, it could increase blood pressure. Because I'm interested in gluconic acid.

The components of Gluconig should not cause an increase in blood pressure. In fact, black cumin seeds have the opposite effect, meaning that their preparations can help lower excessively high blood pressure. Brown algae extracts, on the other hand, should not, in principle, have any effect on blood pressure.

Mireille C.: Can I take both Metabzen at the same time?

Yes. The dosage of Metabzen is 1 capsule, 1 to 2 times a day. If you take 2 capsules, you can take them at the same time or at two different times of the day, for example, one in the morning and one in the evening.

Micheline L.: Are there any side effects from taking Gluconig and Metabzen?

All natural health products, like medications, can have side effects because they are active pharmacological agents. However, in the vast majority of cases, natural health products generally cause rather mild side effects, such as gastrointestinal disturbances (bloating, diarrhea, cramps) or headaches. If you experience more serious side effects, it is very important to report them to your healthcare professional and consider any changes that may be involved, including changes in diet, medications, and natural health products.

Anne M.: Can you take Ashwagandha with Metabzen? Since Ashwagandha is Indian ginseng. That's two ginsengs.

Ashwagandha's common name is indeed "Indian ginseng." However, as its botanical Latin name (Withania somnifera) suggests, it is not a member of the ginseng (Panax) family, like American ginseng (Panax quiquefolius). That said, Ashwagandha's effects are not primarily aimed at metabolic disorders, and it should be safe, in principle, to take it alongside Metabzen.

Sylvie P.: Can chronic fatigue be a precursor to diabetes?

Chronic fatigue is actually a symptom of diabetes rather than a cause. It can therefore be considered not as a precursor, but rather as an indicator of diabetes.

Marie-Chantal B.: I've been doing the detox since January 2nd. I have no abdominal fat and I eat the meals offered. After dinner (salad) I have a down... should I need Metabzen or Gluconig?

Gluconig is specifically indicated for reducing the glycemic index of foods. This will reduce the glucose spike after a meal and reduce the risk of excessive insulin production, which can cause hypoglycemia, often associated with the "down" mentioned above.

Marie-Josee P.: Is Metabzen good for leaky gut? Thank you.

Increased intestinal permeability has been closely associated with metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, and may contribute to the associated low-grade inflammation. Metabzen was not specifically formulated to target increased intestinal permeability. However, the plant extracts it contains (American ginseng, black cumin, milk thistle, turmeric) may provide a significant amount of polyphenols. Polyphenols are now known to have beneficial effects on the intestinal flora. Furthermore, a healthy intestinal flora helps prevent metabolic diseases and, in principle, also prevent the associated increase in intestinal permeability. In theory, Metabzen could therefore have beneficial effects for a leaky gut, but this should be discussed with your healthcare professional beforehand.

Lynda W.: Can someone who takes a baby aspirin a day and 20 mg of statins take Metabzen?

Low-dose aspirin and statins are medications commonly prescribed for diabetics. Metabzen should not normally interfere with these medications. However, for greater safety, it is recommended to space Metabzen and other medications at least two hours apart.

Micheline L.: Is taking Nigella seeds no longer necessary if you take Gluconing and Metabzen?

Taking two capsules of Gluconig and two capsules of Metabzen (maximum daily dosage for both products) will provide 1.2 grams of black seed powder. Clinical studies related to metabolic health have safely used up to 3 grams of black seed powder per day. Therefore, you can continue to consume black seed in moderation while taking both products.

Gaëtane L.: If I understand correctly, if I take blood thinners, I cannot take Metabzen?

Blood thinners have a narrow therapeutic index, which increases the risk of interactions with other medications or natural health products like Metabzen. Therefore, if you are taking blood thinners, you should discuss the risks with your healthcare professional before taking Metabzen.

Johanne A.: Can Metabzen be taken by someone with ulcerative colitis? Thank you.

Metabzen was not formulated to help manage inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. (See also answer to Marie-Josée P.'s question.)

Johanne C.: Metabzen and liver cysts. Can it help dissolve them? Thank you.

According to the usage of the term "dissolve," these are probably liver stones rather than cysts. In the case of liver stones (gallstones), there is indeed a contraindication with Metabzen, because the turmeric it contains increases the secretion of bile. When there are gallstones (liver stones), taking turmeric represents an increased risk of blockage of the bile ducts, which can lead to a "liver crisis."

Christine G.: Hello, when you talk about anticoagulants, is it Aspirin?

Aspirin is indeed a platelet anticoagulant. However, this medication poses less risk of interaction than anticoagulants that act on vitamin K, such as warfarin. To be safer, it is recommended to space Metabzen and other medications at least two hours apart.

Marleen T.: My partner has an iliostomy, can he take Metabzen?

According to the website of the CHU de Québec, associated with Laval University, "An ileostomy is a surgically created opening in the abdomen allowing the evacuation of stool." Since Metabzen does not primarily act on the small intestine, there should be no problem using it in such a condition. However, it is imperative to discuss with health professionals before consuming Metabzen in any condition requiring medical intervention, including ileostomy.

Johanne C.: I repeat my question: could Metabzen be effective for liver cysts? Thank you.

According to the Canadian Liver Foundation: "Cystic liver disease is rare and can take many forms. Cysts (a small growth of fluid that develops in the liver tissue) in the main trunk of the biliary tree are called choledochal cysts. Cysts (lakes) that occur in the small branches of the bile ducts in the liver are called Caroli syndrome. Other cysts in the liver that do not occur in the biliary tree are called polycystic liver disease.
If Mrs. C.'s cysts are in the bile ducts, it would be wiser to avoid taking Metabzen because the turmeric it contains could worsen the symptoms by increasing bile secretion. If the cysts are in the liver itself, Metabzen should be safe, but it would be important to discuss this with a hepatologist (liver specialist).

Joanne B.: Hello, quick question, my partner took Detox, and now he's taking Metabzen, one tablet a day, and he says he has a lot of stomach cramps. He's going to stop and start again to see. Is this a normal reaction, while the system adapts? Thank you.

Both Detox and Metabzen products contain significant amounts of milk thistle. It's best to avoid taking the two products together. For example, you may want to stop taking Detox to see if you experience the desired benefits with Metabzen.

Sylvie B.: If my husband has type 1 diabetes, can he take Gluconig and Metabzen? And if so, what are the benefits if he still takes his insulin?

Type 1 diabetes differs from the much more common type 2 diabetes in that it does require an external source of insulin. Type 1 diabetics could, in principle, also benefit from taking Gluconig, since it is used to reduce the spike in blood sugar after a meal. Your husband may need to carefully adjust his insulin doses based on blood sugar levels. Metabzen contains several components that help the body respond well to insulin. So, here too, the action of the external insulin your husband is taking may be accentuated. Here too, an adjustment of insulin doses will probably be necessary. You should notify your healthcare professional and seek their advice.

Celine L.: Could I take Metabzen or Detox for a week, even if I have gallstones and am taking medication for high blood pressure?

As explained in Joanne B.'s response above, both Detox and Metabzen products contain significant amounts of milk thistle. It is best to avoid taking the two products in combination. Additionally, Metabzen is contraindicated if you have gallbladder stones, as the turmeric it contains may worsen symptoms by increasing bile secretion.

Gaberie Y.: Metabzen interaction question - Hello, I read an article you wrote in Passeport Santé that mentions a possible interaction between ginseng and antidepressants. Can Metabzen be taken with antidepressants?

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) may affect a nervous system enzyme called monoamine oxidase. Some older antidepressants are monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and it would be prudent not to take American ginseng with this type of medication. Alternatively, newer classes of antidepressants are not expected to interact with American ginseng.

Nathalie Fréchette: Having a slowed-down system (hypothyroidism), I take Syntroid. I'm wondering if gluconig could help with metabolism? Is Metabzen and hypothyroidism okay with Syntroid?

A synthroid (or levothyroxine) is a medication effectively used to treat conditions related to thyroid dysfunction. It is a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), a hormone naturally produced by the thyroid. There is a potential risk of synthroid interacting with blood sugar-lowering medications such as metformin. The result may be reduced effectiveness of metformin due to synthroid's effect on carbohydrate metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Because some of the components of Gluconig and Metabzen act in a similar way to metformin, there may be an effect of synthroid. A healthcare professional's advice and support should be sought before using Gluconig and Metabzen products in conjunction with synthroid. For example, closer monitoring of blood sugar levels may be advisable.

Marie-France Duquette: Are Nexium and Metabzen compatible?

Nexium is a medication that acts on the stomach's proton pump to reduce stomach acid and the so-called "heartburn." In principle, none of the ingredients in MJ's Metabzen product should interact negatively with Nexium, and vice versa.

THYROID GLAND PROBLEMS

Danielle Laurence: Hello, is the Complete recommended for someone with thyroid problems? Thank you.

MJ's "Le Complet" product is partly composed of microalgae, such as spirulina and chlorella, which are rich in vitamins, particularly those of the B complex (B1, B2 and B3). B complex vitamins may be beneficial for people suffering from thyroid problems, but they should be used with caution and in consultation with a healthcare professional.

Generally, B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12) play a central role in energy metabolism, nervous system function, and red blood cell production. Adequate vitamin B12 intake can help people with hypothyroidism, as deficiency is common in this condition. In people with hyperthyroidism, certain B vitamins, such as B1 (thiamine), can help alleviate symptoms, such as fatigue and mood disturbances (e.g., irritability).

Christine Joyal: Are there any contraindications with Detox and Gestox with Synthroid?

There are no Health Canada contraindications to taking MJ Détox or MJ Gestox with Synthroid or if you have thyroid problems. However, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional (pharmacist, doctor, or other) when taking medications and natural health products at the same time. Remember that it is recommended to space the intake of medications and natural health products at least two hours apart to minimize potential interactions between the two.

PROTEINS

France M.: I better understand the important role of protein in each of our meals. I have a question: does a protein deficiency affect our central nervous system? Thanks in advance!

Yes, adequate protein intake is important for optimal central nervous system health. Dietary protein provides the amino acids needed to produce several neurotransmitters, their receptors, and ion channels, all of which are involved in communication between neurons. Dietary amino acids also serve to produce a wide range of enzymes, as well as structural and communication proteins within neurons. These components are particularly important for neuron function and defense against oxidative stress and inflammation. Protein deficiency can therefore lead to cognitive, emotional, and neurological disorders.

Martine L.: Since I am paraplegic and have lost a lot of muscle mass, should I take less protein than someone who does not have a disability?

For a paraplegic person, protein intake must be adapted to their condition and support from health professionals such as nutritionists/dieticians is strongly recommended.

Although there is often muscle wasting below the injury, adequate protein intake is necessary, especially depending on the level of physical activity. For a more sedentary person, a consumption of approximately 1 to 1.2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day is recommended, while for an active person, protein intake can be increased to approximately 1.5 g/kg/day and adjusted according to the intensity of physical activity. Clinical studies even show that a diet richer in protein helps avoid cardiometabolic disorders that can develop over time in paraplegics. Obviously, the goal always remains to seek a healthy diet with a preference for lean meats and fewer hyperprocessed foods.

MJ Client: Does excess protein consumption turn into fat? I know the formula x 1.2 grams / kilo. If my body doesn't assimilate all the protein I eat, do I eliminate it or store it as fat?

Generally, the answer is no. Ingested protein is usually digested by enzymes in the stomach and intestines to provide amino acids that will be used for the synthesis and repair of the body's proteins. If there is an excess of protein, especially without physical activity, amino acids can be converted into glucose, and if the latter is also in excess, it can actually be converted into lipids and stored in the body's adipose tissue (fat). But this is very energy-intensive and is really not the body's preferred route.

Why wouldn't the body assimilate proteins?

A problem with the pancreas and the production of digestive enzymes could lead to problems with protein assimilation.

EYE HEALTH

Ka Thy: Is Eye Health Formula good for light sensitivity? What about night driving?

MJ Eye Health contains lutein and zeaxanthin. These natural ingredients help protect the eye from blue light and oxidative stress. They also increase the optical density of the macula (the central area of the retina), which increases contrast sensitivity while reducing glare. These effects are supported by clinical studies. The product should therefore help protect against light sensitivity and aid in night driving.

INFRARED SAUNA

Guylaine Roy: Is the infrared sauna contraindicated for a mother who has just given birth? I was thinking of offering sessions to my son and his partner who will be welcoming their little treasure in a few days... just to give them some romantic moments of relaxation.

Unfortunately, it is recommended to avoid infrared saunas in the first six weeks after giving birth, particularly because this type of sauna can increase vasodilation, which can be problematic especially if there are wounds (cesarean section, episiotomy) that are healing. But after these six weeks of grace, infrared saunas can actually be beneficial, for example, by relaxing muscles and relieving postpartum back or pelvic pain.

Hélène Brisebois: What are the contraindications for using an infrared sauna? And how much time per day or week is optimal or necessary to get the most out of it?

General contraindications for infrared saunas are much the same as for traditional (Finnish) saunas and include fever, pregnancy (especially during the first trimester), severe hypotension, untreated progressive cancers, open wounds or burns, unstable (poorly controlled) cardiovascular disease, and so on. As for optimal treatment, clinical studies have used periods of 15 to 20 minutes per day, 3 to 5 times per week, for periods of one to three months.

SELENIUM AND LYCOPENE FROM TOMATO

Tania: Question regarding Selenium, why should we consult a practitioner if we have a history of skin cancer "without the presence of melanoma" If I have already had malignant melanoma should I consult? Thank you

Michel Harrison: Is it true that selenium should not be taken if you have a history of skin cancer?

Several clinical studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between selenium intake and various forms of cancer. For the most part, these studies have been of good quality. Unfortunately, they show no significant trend between selenium intake and a reduced risk of several cancers. However, an increased risk of prostate and skin cancer has been noted. These are association studies and do not necessarily mean that selenium "causes" these cancers. However, caution is advised, which is why selenium is not recommended in connection with skin cancer. It is therefore advisable to consult a healthcare professional if you have a history of skin cancer and wish to take selenium supplements.

Maggie Contant: Hyperthyroidism: Can Selenium and Coenzyme Q10 Help Us "Stabilize" the Thyroid Gland?

In hyperthyroidism, the body produces too much thyroid hormone. This greatly stimulates metabolism, causing significant oxidative stress and depletion of coenzyme Q10 stores. Thus, co-Q10 supplementation can help combat this depletion, reduce oxidative stress, and decrease fatigue. Selenium, on the other hand, does not appear to have a direct effect on thyroid hormone levels but promotes a healthy balance between T4 and T3. Selenium also provides good antioxidant support and has been shown to reduce ophthalmic symptoms (bulging eyes) in clinical studies.

Pascale Bernard: Selenium and lycopene from tomatoes: for the internal sun protection effect... after how long is it effective and to what degree according to studies? Should it be consumed months in advance? What protection factor is it equivalent to? JeaYves had found a study, I don't know if it's this one https://maisonjacynthe.ca/fr/blog/selenium-lycopene-de-tomates-antioxydants-nutricosmetique-uv.html

UV rays cause damage to the DNA of skin cells through oxidative stress, and this can contribute to the development of skin cancer over time. Since selenium and lycopene are powerful antioxidants, they have been incorporated into some antioxidant formulations that have been studied in clinical studies (including the one cited on the MJ website). The results are encouraging but difficult to attribute solely to the selenium-lycopene duo since other antioxidants were included in the formulas. The beneficial effects (including increased skin defenses against UV rays – thus reducing sunburn) occurred between 2 and 7 weeks of treatment. However, the study authors did not quantify the protection in SPF and they all insist that this is a complementary treatment and not a replacement for topical sunscreens.

Monique Rioux: Hello, can I take selenium if I take syntroid?
Caroline R. Dupuis: Can you take Health Support and Selenium with Syntroid?

There is no formal contraindication to consuming selenium in combination with synthroid, but certain precautions should be taken and certain precautions should be consulted/supported by a healthcare professional. It is particularly important to follow the dosage carefully (too much selenium can be harmful) and to space out the intake of the supplement and the medication by at least 4 hours.

For the MJ Health Support product, it's more complicated... The zinc in Health Support can decrease the absorption of synthroid, and there are some components that also affect energy metabolism. It is therefore strongly recommended to consult/be accompanied by a healthcare professional if you want to take Health Support with the synthoid medication. Once again, it is important to follow the dosage and space the intake of the supplement and medication at least 2 to 4 hours apart.

Eve Fortin: What is the recommended dose of selenium to achieve these beneficial effects?

According to Health Canada, the recommended dietary intake for selenium is 55 micrograms/day (60-70 micrograms/day if pregnant or breastfeeding) and the tolerable upper intake level is 400 micrograms/day. In most clinical studies, daily doses between 100 and 200 micrograms have been used successfully. The MJ Selenium product provides a daily dose of 200 micrograms, which is therefore in line with human studies. It is still important to respect the dosage.

HEALTH SUPPORT

Ghislaine Adam: I've finished my jar of Health Support, and should I take it all the time or should I stop for a while?

MJ Health Support has been formulated to support the major systems of the human body that weaken with age (nervous, immune, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and metabolic systems). It can be taken long-term to optimize its effects, but it is possible, even desirable, to take breaks from time to time.

Denise Bernard: Without a gallbladder, will the Health Support be metabolized well?

Yes, the absence of a gallbladder should not affect the effectiveness of the MJ Health Support product.

Sleep, Magnesium & Melatonin

Lise R.: It would be interesting during Magnesium Week to talk about the effect of magnesium with calcium (dairy products).

There is indeed logic in discussing the relationship between calcium and magnesium, particularly in terms of their intestinal absorption. Indeed, one affects the absorption of the other, and many consider a 2:1 calcium-magnesium ratio to be optimal for the best absorption of these two minerals.

And that magnesium should not be taken at more than 350 mg/dose, to be taken more often but in lower doses.

Health Canada's recommended dietary intake for adults is 310-320 mg/day for women and 400-420 mg/day for men. According to Health Canada, these dietary sources can be supplemented with an additional 350 mg/day from supplements for adults of both sexes. Interestingly, clinical studies examining the potential effect of magnesium on sleep used daily doses of 250 to 500 mg/day. However, the forms of magnesium varied greatly and included forms that were less well absorbed than the magnesium diglycinate found in MJ Magnesium.

I also noticed that MJ's magnesium capsules contain 84 mg of magnesium + taurine etc. Does that mean I'm only getting 84 mg of magnesium per capsule? It would be good to explain if taurine is a form of magnesium. I know, but those who look at labels should understand too.

Yes, MJ Magnesium contains 84 mg of magnesium diglycinate. The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 capsules 1 to 2 times daily. This is a maximum of 336 mg, which is close to the 350 mg upper intake limit recommended by Health Canada.

No, taurine is NOT a form of magnesium. It is a sulfur-containing amino acid that Health Canada recognizes as a health claim to help maintain cardiovascular function. There is also clinical evidence for a role for taurine in sleep, but it is limited. The evidence for the beneficial effect of magnesium on sleep and even muscle cramps is also mixed. This is why Health Canada does not allow a sleep-related claim for MJ Magnesium.

Marie C Picard: If I take magnesium in the morning, is there an impact because I take it with the yellow juice and omega 3?

No, there is no contraindication to taking magnesium with yellow juice and omega 3.

Francine Bolduc: How many mg of magnesium should you take at bedtime?

Health Canada's recommended dietary intake for adults is 310-320 mg/day for women and 400-420 mg/day for men. According to Health Canada, these dietary sources can be supplemented with an additional 350 mg/day from supplements for adults of both sexes. This means you can take up to 350 mg/day before bedtime.

Sabrina Bouchard: Why can't some people take melatonin? It disrupts my nights.

Some people do indeed react paradoxically to melatonin. The main cause is individual hypersensitivity, such as an overactive nervous system, which leads to agitation instead of relaxation. But it may also be that the melatonin dosage is too high (especially in cases of hypersensitivity) or that the timing of melatonin intake is not optimal. It would therefore be advisable to try smaller doses (0.3 to 1 mg instead of 3 to 5 mg per day) or different forms such as extended-release or sublingual (under the tongue) formulas. Ideally, melatonin should also be taken between 30 and 60 minutes before bed. It is always important to also develop a calming routine before going to bed, including stopping the use of electronic devices.

Ginette Boulianne: I take Paxil 20 mg, can I take sleep products?

Yes, but it would be highly advisable to have the support of a healthcare professional because Paxil can accentuate the sedative effects of sleep supplements, especially those based on calming and sedative herbs. Alcohol consumption should also be avoided, as it can also increase drowsiness. Caution is also advised when driving or operating heavy machinery due to this increased drowsiness.

Annie Cote: So, to promote a good night's sleep, how long before bedtime should you take magnesium and melatonin?

Ideally, magnesium, melatonin, or both supplements should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before bed. It's still important to develop a calming bedtime routine, including stopping electronic devices.

Effects of magnesium deficiency

In epidemiological studies, people with the lowest blood magnesium levels consistently suffer from very short sleep (less than 5 hours per night). Magnesium deficiency is also associated with a greater risk of stress, anxiety, depression, and nighttime muscle cramps.

If we eat nuts, is that enough magnesium?

No, a handful of almonds (about 30g) provides about 80mg of magnesium, which is far from the recommended dietary intake for adults: 310-320mg/day for women and 400-420mg/day for men.

Where is blue light found? The kind that inhibits melatonin production (one specialist mentioned children's toys, light bulbs, clocks, and objects in the bedroom...)

Natural blue light comes from the sun. There are also artificial sources of blue light, including LED screens on electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, computers), as well as anything that incorporates LED elements, such as light bulbs or other light sources (dials, toys, etc.), as well as fluorescent light sources.

Can people who experience or are more aware of nightmares with melatonin stop having them after a while?

Melatonin is generally well tolerated, and its side effects are mild and variable. Some people may experience vivid or unpleasant dreams, even nightmares. This depends on the dose, when melatonin is taken, and individual sensitivities. Often, unwanted side effects resolve on their own over time or when the dose and timing are adjusted.

Do seniors benefit from longer nights for their brain health?

It's not just a matter of longer nights, but of sleep quality. Older adults generally have more sleep problems than younger people, and these problems are worse in people with mild cognitive impairment and even more so in those suffering from dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease. The most common problems are a longer time to fall asleep, shorter deep sleep, and a shorter REM period. A shortened REM period can initiate or accentuate cognitive decline since it is during this period that emotional and procedural memory consolidation takes place. Approaches that can help older adults sleep better include healthy lifestyle habits, including good hygiene/sleep routine. Adequate magnesium and melatonin intake, or the use of relaxing herbs can also help. Finally, we must manage situations that aggravate sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, chronic pain, or the side effects of certain medications that cause agitation or insomnia.

Christiane Boisvert: I'm taking Prebagalin. So can I also take all three products (sleep powder, melatonin, magnesium)?

Pregabalin is a medication commonly prescribed to treat neuropathic pain by reducing nerve excitability. Its normal side effects include dizziness and loss of balance, as well as drowsiness and mental confusion, especially at the beginning of treatment and with higher doses (300 mg per day and above). If pregabalin is combined with melatonin, it can increase drowsiness and promote sleep onset, which is a positive effect. However, it can also increase drowsiness upon waking and during the day, which is problematic when driving or working with heavy machinery. There may also be increased dizziness and therefore an increased risk of falls, especially in the elderly. The combination can be managed, but it is strongly recommended to be accompanied by a healthcare professional (doctor, pharmacist, clinical nurse) and to use lower doses of melatonin initially.

It's a bit the same with the Dodo Super powder product, which contains several calming herbs to promote sleep. Since pregabalin reduces nervous excitability, combining it with calming herbs can increase drowsiness and fatigue, which is good at bedtime but more problematic during the day. Therefore, as with melatonin, it's advisable to be accompanied by a healthcare professional, avoid driving or working with heavy machinery, and space out the intake of the supplement and medication by a few hours.

In the case of magnesium, the combination with pregabalin is generally considered safe, especially if the individual products are taken a few hours apart. Magnesium may slightly reduce the absorption of the drug by binding to it. Otherwise, the combination should have positive effects on muscle cramps and a beneficial effect on sleep.

It is not recommended to combine multiple sleep products (such as melatonin, magnesium, and Sleep Powder) while taking pregabalin because the side effects will increase and become more dangerous. Again, start with smaller doses of the supplements and be supervised by a healthcare professional.

MAGNESIUM STEARATE AND MALTODEXTRIN

Caroline Houle: Why add maltodextrin to the Mushroom & Adaptogen blend? I heard that maltodextrin isn't good for the microbiota. Thanks in advance.
Cinthia Tassi: Do the magnesium stearate and maltodextrin in supplements provide benefits to the body?

Magnesium stearate is a lubricating agent that helps move powders through production machinery, particularly by preventing natural health products from sticking to the machinery. Maltodextrin, on the other hand, is used more as a filler to ensure uniform doses distributed in NHP capsules. In both cases, the amounts of magnesium stearate and maltodextrin are tiny compared to the doses needed to cause adverse health effects. For example, maltodextrin can affect blood sugar at doses of 30-50g per day or have effects on the microbiota at doses of 50-75g, while the amount in a capsule generally does not exceed 200 mg, which is 200-400 times less. In the case of magnesium stearate, the quantities used are in the order of 5-10 mg per capsule, which is 250-500 times lower than the maximum daily dose considered safe by the European Food Safety Agency.

Micheline Landry: I wanted to know why magnesium stearate is not suggested in certain health products?

Magnesium stearate is primarily used as an anti-caking agent and lubricant in the manufacturing of capsules and tablets in the natural health product industry to prevent powders from sticking to manufacturing machinery. It is not considered a medicinal ingredient.

VITAMIN C AND CAMU CAMU

Chantal Bissonnette: Side effects of excess vitamin C?

Vitamin C is water-soluble, and if taken in excess, most of it will be excreted in the urine. However, doses exceeding 2000 mg (2 grams) per day can cause adverse effects such as digestive problems, an increased risk of kidney stones, and imbalances in the absorption of copper (too low) and iron (too high). In large doses, vitamin C can promote oxidative stress rather than fulfilling its role as an antioxidant.

Jenn Joris: I take one chewable vitamin C tablet a day (it's so good) can I add camu camu once or twice a week?

According to Health Canada, the recommended dietary intake of vitamin C for adults (18 years and older) is 90 mg per day for men and 75 mg per day for women. According to the same source, the tolerable upper intake (maximum daily amount considered safe by Health Canada) of vitamin C for adults is 2000 mg per day, for both men and women. MJ Chewable Vitamin C contains 500 mg of vitamin C per tablet, while MJ Camu Camu Powder provides 1129 mg of vitamin C per teaspoon. Therefore, one can easily consume one tablet of Chewable Vitamin C and one teaspoon of Camu Camu Powder each day without exceeding the tolerable upper intake recommended by Health Canada.

Lise Desjardins: For people who have kidney stones (calcium oxalate), is there a daily limit to the amount of Camu Camu they can put in the fountain of youth?

For people at risk for kidney stones, especially calcium oxalate stones, it is recommended to limit vitamin C intake to 200 mg per day. Vitamin C can be broken down into oxalate in the body, and studies show that consuming more than 500-1000 mg of vitamin C per day increases the risk of kidney stones. Since MJ Camu Camu Powder provides 1129 mg of vitamin C per teaspoon, a person at risk for kidney stones should be limited to less than a quarter teaspoon per day. These at-risk individuals should consult a healthcare professional before starting supplements containing vitamin C.

Lynda Lafleur: What is the ideal daily dose of Camu Camu?

Recommended daily doses range from 1 to 5 grams of Camu Camu powder, or about half to two and a half teaspoons (always per day). More specifically, for MJ Camu Camu powder, each teaspoon provides 1129 mg of vitamin C. Thus, consuming about 2 teaspoons per day will provide a vitamin C intake that slightly exceeds the tolerable upper intake of vitamin C, which is 2000 mg per day for adults.

VITAMINS D AND D & K

Diane Côté: What do you think about vitamin D being prescribed at 10,000 IU by doctors?
Josée Laberge: My doctor has been prescribing 10,000 IU of vitamin D once a week for a long time. Is that okay or should I take more?

The weekly dose of 10,000 IU per week is indeed popular because it is more convenient (fewer capsules or tablets). It provides enough vitamin D to meet the recommended dietary intake set by Health Canada (600-800 IU/day for children and adults), and even exceed it while remaining safe. Opinions are divided on whether this weekly method of taking vitamin D is better or worse than daily intake. The best is to go with what works best for you personally.

Melanie Leblanc: If someone took 3 capsules of vitamin D 2,500 mg (thinking it was 1,000 mg), since it's fat-soluble, I assume it's best to stop taking it for a while?

This vitamin D intake is equivalent to 7,500 IU per day, which is close to double the tolerable upper intake recommended by Health Canada (4,000 IU for ages 9 and up). Indeed, the person could take a break for a few days, for example a week, and then resume taking just one of these 2,500 IU capsules per day.

Nathalie Turcotte: Can someone taking a blood thinner (Aspirin) take vitamins D and K?
Savoie Manon: If you take a small blue Aspirin 80 mg, I imagine you shouldn't take D with K? Only D?
Mélanie Leblanc: If I take blood thinners (Rivasa 80 mg), can I take vitamin D + K?

There are two forms of vitamin K. K1, or phylloquinone, is a vitamin that is necessary for the production of clotting factors. This is the one that should be avoided when taking blood thinners. On the other hand, K2, or menaquinone, plays a role in binding calcium in bones and preventing calcification of soft tissues, such as arteries. It is vitamin K2 that is present in Maison Jacynthe's Vitamins D and K product, and it is therefore safe to consume these products if you are taking blood thinners. However, remember to space out medications and natural health products by at least two hours.

Sweet Sun: How long does the vitamin D and K course and omega last?

Taking vitamins D+K or omega-3 is not a cure. In principle, you can take both products continuously, since the body benefits from them continuously. However, it is also possible to take occasional breaks of a few days from taking these natural health products, and this is safe.

Codaire Marie Lou Lou: Should vitamin D/K be taken with a fatty substance for better performance?

Yes, because taking fat-soluble vitamins with fatty substances (good oils, oily fish, avocados, nuts) will increase their absorption. Indeed, fatty substances will stimulate the production of bile by the liver and bile is essential for the proper absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

Can you take too much vitamin D? That is, more than your daily dose?

According to Health Canada, the recommended dietary intake for adults is 600 to 800 international units (IU) per day, while the tolerable upper intake level is 4,000 IU/day. If this maximum daily intake is respected, there is little risk of adverse effects. However, this is a controversial topic because some professionals advocate higher daily intakes because they consider vitamin D to be very safe. However, the higher the dose, the greater the risks, particularly the risk of soft tissue calcification.

Sofia Mendonça: I like that we're talking about D+K. In the last live, we talked about the impact of K on calcification. Will this help with calcific tendonitis of the shoulder?

In principle, vitamin K2 helps prevent calcification of soft tissues, including tendons, and should therefore be useful in the described condition. On the other hand, the same vitamin K2 works in concert with vitamin D to optimize bone calcification. In the described case, it would still be advisable to seek the advice of a healthcare professional.

ZINC

Ginette D. Bélanger: I take a zinc supplement and I take Synthroid. Should I stop taking the zinc? I'll leave 4 hours between the two. Zinc helps a lot with my nails. Thank you.

Zinc, like many other minerals such as iron, calcium, or magnesium, can actually decrease the absorption of the Synthroid medication. If you space your zinc and Synthroid intakes 4 hours apart as you suggest, this should avoid the potential interaction and you can continue to take your zinc supplement and medication.

VARIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT THE USE OF CERTAIN SUPPLEMENTS IN GENERAL OR IN SPECIFIC HEALTH CONDITIONS

Annie Lamoureux: (with kidney stones) Can I take two courses of Gestox one after the other?

The principle of detoxification "cures" is to remove toxins from the tissues and promote their elimination through urine and stool. Normally, such a cure is often suggested at the time of the change of seasons (i.e. approximately every three months). Therefore, it is not recommended to do two cures one directly after the other.

Furthermore, taking MJ Gestox in the context of kidney stones requires more precautions. Indeed, the product contains nettle and dandelion, two medicinal plants with diuretic properties. In this context, it is important to know that in contemporary medicine, diuretic medications are not systematically recommended for a person suffering from kidney stones. Their use must be personalized according to the type of stones, test results, and medical history. A consultation with a nephrologist or urologist is essential to determine the most appropriate treatment. The same applies to the use of MJ Gestox for a person suffering from kidney stones.

Annie Cote: Is Gestox safe for polycystic kidneys?

Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the formation of multiple cysts (fluid-filled sacs) and affects kidney function. It is often associated with high blood pressure and urinary tract infections.

Gestox contains dandelion and nettle, two plants known for their diuretic effects and therefore affect kidney function. In this context, it would be imperative to seek the advice of a nephrologist or urologist before consuming Gestox if you suffer from polycystic kidney disease.

France Arpin: Health support, can we take it year-round?

Yes, it is possible to consume the MJ Health Support product on a daily and continuous basis.

Aleksandra Schröder: Is it possible that this product isn't suitable for everyone? It makes me dizzy, nauseous... I want to point out that the adaptogens I've taken in the past had the same effect. What do you think is the reason? Thank you.

Like medications, and even some foods, natural health products do not produce the same effects in different people. It is advisable to avoid consuming foods, medications, or natural health products that cause discomfort or adverse effects.

When it comes to dizziness and nausea, adaptogens are herbs that typically affect your hormonal, nervous, and immune systems (to varying degrees, depending on the herb). Therefore, it's possible that the effects of such products on your nervous system could cause the symptoms described.

Noémie Poulin: Would it be possible to ask Mr. Haddad if he knows the dose of milk thistle that is permitted while breastfeeding, according to Health Canada or tradition? Thank you very much!

According to its milk thistle monograph, Health Canada has not issued any contraindications for the use of this plant in pregnant or breastfeeding women. They advise to "consult a health care practitioner/health care provider/health professional/doctor/physician before use." I do not know the safe dose of milk thistle during breastfeeding, and I suspect that few doctors do either. I advise you to consult a certified herbalist who can better advise you. You can find such a resource by contacting the Guild of Herbalists of Quebec (https://guildedesherboristes.org/pages/trouver-un-membre-herboristes-therapeutes-accredites).

Bastarache Nathalie: Hello, I also tried Detox for two days and my stomach was very swollen and I was very tired, so I stopped after two days. I have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Can I try Detox again?

Like medications, and even some foods, natural health products vary in their effects on different people. Sometimes, side effects like the ones you describe occur, but may eventually lessen or disappear. You may want to try the Detox again to see if the side effects return. Generally, it is advisable to avoid continuing to consume any foods, medications, or natural health products that cause discomfort or side effects.

Christine Gagne: I ordered Gestox but not Detox, is it dangerous to take Gestox without Detox?

It is not mandatory to take MJ Detox before MJ Gestox. You can actually take Gestox alone.

Christine Lajeunesse: I have to take medication for life for acid reflux, Dexlansoprazole and Domperidone. It's not caused by my diet, but rather by the muscle or ring between the esophagus and the stomach that no longer works. It seems that 10% of the population has this problem. I would like to eliminate these medications, but they control the inconveniences of the situation. Even if I'm afraid that it will damage my organs in the long term. I'm still young and want to be healthy for a long time! Do you have any natural suggestions to help me?

There is good evidence that aloe juice is beneficial for gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Chantale Scott: If my hemoglobin is high and above normal... Can I take adaptogens?

To answer this question, you'd need to know the cause of your elevated hemoglobin levels. Adaptogens are herbs that typically affect the hormonal, nervous, and immune systems (to varying degrees depending on the herb). These herbs can have direct or indirect effects on blood composition and circulation. Therefore, you should consult a healthcare professional before taking them for your current condition.

Bensalem Karima: Detox for someone who has had throat cancer, can we take it without any problem?

The MJ Detox product specifically targets liver function and health, particularly through the presence of plants and components that protect the liver and promote bile production. In principle, this should not have a negative impact on someone who has suffered from throat cancer. However, since the liver is an important organ involved in the metabolism of a majority of medications, including cancer medications, the Detox product could have effects on this level. It is therefore advisable to consult a healthcare professional before using it.

Annie L.: Can I take two courses of Gestox one after the other?

Ideally, no. The principle of cures is that they are time-limited. Traditionally, for example in Western herbalism, they can be repeated as needed, such as at the change of seasons (so approximately every three months), after a period of excess, or after intense drug treatment.

Lise R.: What signs should we observe to stop the treatment with Detox or Gestox so as not to worsen our situation?

It is indeed important to listen to your body when undertaking any intervention with natural health products (or medications). Common minor discomforts (from both NHPs and medications) mainly include those of the digestive system (abdominal pain, bloating), but can also sometimes include headaches or nausea. In the case of Gestox, some of its components activate the circulation of lymph to help remove toxins from the tissues, according to traditional Western herbalism. Therefore, we can sometimes observe skin rashes if the body is unable to eliminate toxins efficiently enough. These discomforts often disappear over time, but if they persist, it is best to stop taking the product.

Eve F.: I have been taking Metabzen since it came out and I have had beneficial effects on my health...does Gestox have more milk thistle?

I'm glad Metabzen can have beneficial effects on your health. It would be interesting to know what these beneficial effects are. To answer your question, no, Gestox actually contains half the amount of milk thistle per capsule as Metabzen. So, two capsules of Gestox contain the same amount of milk thistle extract as one capsule of Metabzen.

Eve F.: What is the benefit of taking Gestox compared to Metabzen?

Gestox is formulated to be taken over a period of approximately three weeks to activate lymph flow and stimulate the liver and kidneys, the body's two main elimination organs. This should allow the body to better circulate and eliminate cellular waste and toxins. Metabzen, on the other hand, is formulated to help better manage metabolism and thus help prevent sugar and fat imbalances in the body, and the associated cardiometabolic disturbances.

Jess Toman: First question: I know there's already an answer to this on the site, but I'm still confused. When can we take our supplements? Can we take them all at the same time? If, for example, I take the fiber in the morning, could I take vitamin D, Omega, and the Totale at the same time an hour later? Just before eating or after? Is it better to take them in the evening (except the Totale)? For consistency, it would have to be as simple as possible so that I don't abandon the project haha.

It's best to wait one to two hours after taking fiber before taking other supplements. However, other supplements can be taken together without any problem. As for the time of day to take them, there is no specific prescription. If lunch or dinner is a convenient time for you, you can choose to take your supplements before one of these two meals.

Jess Toman: Second question: Difference between Health Support and Total? I read in several comments that if we are not sick, Health Support would be even better, or to alternate between the two (1 day/2)?

There is no contraindication to taking the Health Support product concurrently with the multivitamin and mineral product, The Total. Both products can be taken daily.

Jt William: Does taking supplements/vitamin capsules break the fast?

Generally, supplements (natural health products), including vitamins and minerals, contain only trace amounts of the macronutrients carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Therefore, taking them cannot really be considered to break the fast, as long as they are taken with water and not juice.

Micheline Landry: I had a reaction to Gestox (red, swollen, and hot face). Everything went well with Detox. I wonder why? Before starting Detox, I was taking Metabzen and everything was fine.

The ingredients found in Gestox and not in other supplements are horse chestnut and red clover. You may have an intolerance to one of these two plants.

Lucie Ménard: When it says 1 tablet 3 times a day, can we take them at the same time? Is there really a difference between 3 capsules once a day and 1 capsule 3 times a day?

This will depend on the product in question. For example, with Gluconig, you should take one tablet before each of the two main meals of the day for maximum effectiveness. In other cases, such as with Health Support, it's fine to take all three capsules at once or one tablet three times a day.

Marie-France Lacroix: What kinds of problems can unmethylated folic acid supplements cause when it accumulates? Is it dangerous in the long term for any particular organ?

Health Canada's recommended dietary intake for folate is 400 micrograms per day, while the tolerable upper intake level is 1000 micrograms per day. Therefore, it is advisable to maintain this daily intake range (400-1000 micrograms). Higher doses of folic acid have been associated primarily with digestive (bloating, abdominal pain, nausea) and neurological (including cognitive impairment, insomnia, irritability, and anxiety) problems. Neurological problems are more serious if folic acid is combined with a vitamin B12 deficiency, as folic acid intake can mask a B12 deficiency.

Hélène Aubé: I want to start a Detox and Gestox treatment. If we only eat two meals a day, do we then only take two Detox capsules per day for 10 days? While taking the Detox and Gestox, can we take digestive enzymes, or is it not necessary?

The recommended dose of MJ's Detox product is 2-3 capsules per day, regardless of the number of meals you eat. If you eat two meals, yes, you can take one capsule with each meal, or take one capsule with one meal and two capsules with the other. The suggested duration of taking Detox is one week, followed by three weeks of taking Gestox. Neither product provides digestive enzymes, so you can indeed consume such enzymes at the same time. It can be helpful, but it is not necessary.

Annie Lebleu Beauregard: If I have to give myself B12 by injection, can my body absorb the B complex?

It is important to know the reason for prescribing vitamin B12 injections, as there are several possible causes. Generally, however, it is known that stomach cells produce a molecule called "intrinsic factor," which is necessary for the proper absorption of vitamin B12 (essential for the production of red blood cells; B12 deficiency causes anemia). Certain diseases and medications, such as proton pump inhibitors (such as Pentoprazole), affect stomach cells and decrease their production of intrinsic factor. Absorption of other B-complex vitamins does not require intrinsic factor, and they should be absorbed normally.

Sylvie MacLachlan: If you take 20 or more vitamins at the same time, can it be hard on the liver?

In principle, no, vitamins, especially water-soluble ones (hydrosoluble), will be eliminated by the kidneys and not by the liver. In the case of oil-soluble vitamins (fat-soluble), they can accumulate in organs, such as fats and the liver. They can cause harmful effects when taken in excess, especially vitamin A, which can damage the liver.

Annie Lebleu Beauregard: And can we have effects on reflux (why do we have reflux) with aloe juice and apple cider vinegar before meals?
Chantal Cardin: Is apple cider vinegar okay for reflux and esophagitis? I'm finished with a 3-month course of pantoprazole.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as heartburn, is usually caused by excessive stomach acid production combined with a weak lower esophageal sphincter. This causes stomach acid to back up into the esophagus and cause heartburn. Aloe vera juice has been shown to be beneficial in this context. Conversely, apple cider vinegar can worsen the symptoms and consequences of gastroesophageal reflux disease or esophagitis.

France Arpin: Can taking several supplements a day affect our kidneys?

It depends a lot on the supplements you take. Generally, most supplements are well tolerated and do not put an excessive strain on the kidneys. However, some supplements can pose a certain risk, especially when you have kidney problems or diseases, such as creatine. In these cases, there is usually a warning to this effect on the label of the natural health product, and they should be taken seriously.

Codaire Marie Lou Lou: How our body can recognize, assimilate, digest and metabolize all the supplements we absorb day after day. Thank you.

The human body is truly fascinating and impressive. We actually consume a very wide variety of substances from diet and the environment, including supplements. The body has many mechanisms across several organs to manage all these substances, especially the organs that are at the interface between the exterior and interior of the body, such as the skin, lungs, and gastrointestinal system. The liver also plays an important sentinel role because all blood from the viscera must pass through it before reaching the general circulation. It recognizes, sorts, and helps metabolize and excrete several exogenous substances, including supplements.

Mj Cossette: Are glutamine and L-glutamine the same thing?

The L in L-glutamine refers to the chemical orientation of the molecule. All amino acids exist in nature in either the L or D form (mirror images of each other), but the L form is naturally occurring for all amino acids found in all human proteins. The D form is found in some bacteria and antibiotics. For our purposes, especially with regard to supplements, the glutamine we're talking about is L-glutamine.

Carolle Cayer: How can we check whether LDL is oxidized, as Dr. Haddad just mentioned? Thank you.

The measurement of oxidized LDL in the blood can be performed by specific biochemical tests called ELISA. However, these are not routinely performed tests, but are rather reserved for clinical research or specialized evaluations, particularly in preventive or cardiovascular medicine.

Caroline R. Dupuis: Do we alternate between The Complete and Health Support?

MJ La Totale is a fairly comprehensive multivitamin and mineral complex. MJ Health Support also includes around fifteen components designed to support the body's major systems that deteriorate with age, including the nervous (cognitive decline), immune, musculoskeletal, and cardiometabolic systems. Although these are two complex formulas, they complement each other and can therefore be taken together without any problems.

Téo Kim: Is it possible to know when is the best time of day to take each supplement? Thank you Pierre Haddad and Jacynthe

It is impossible to answer this question in general terms because it depends a lot on the type of supplement. Indeed, for some supplements, the intake is spread over 2 or 3 times during the day (e.g. Gluconig) while the majority can be consumed in a single dose. For more energizing supplements, such as adaptogens or the MJ Focus product, it is better to consume them in the morning while for more calming products, such as magnesium or melatonin, it is better to consume them in the evening before going to bed. It is also important to remember to space the intake of natural health products (supplements) and medications by at least 2 hours, but the order can be reversed (medications before supplements).

Codaire Marie Lou Lou: My optometrist told me that if you don't suffer from macular degeneration, the eye health formula will have no benefit for this condition. Your opinion. Thank you.

Indeed, if you don't suffer from macular degeneration, you can't expect to benefit from a disease you don't have! More seriously, clinical studies have shown that consuming lutein and zeaxanthin in the MJ Eye Health formula helps prevent age-related macular degeneration and its progression to more advanced stages of the disease. These effects were even greater in people who consumed few carotenoids in their diet.

Julie L.: Is Health Support good for autoimmune disease with muscle pain and stiffness? As well as coenzyme Q10? The difference between Health Support and Metabzen, which you don't recommend for autoimmune diseases... thank you

It is difficult to answer this question because there are several autoimmune diseases that include muscle pain and stiffness among their symptoms…

Regarding MJ Health Support and Metabzen, they are different but can be complementary. Health Support is a broader formula that aims to support several body systems that weaken with age, while Metabzen more specifically targets support for metabolic diseases. Again, it is not possible to generally answer for autoimmune diseases as to whether or not these formulas are indicated in this context.

Solange Lachance: For blepharitis, is astaxanthin good?

Blepharitis is a chronic inflammation of the eyelids, especially near the eyelashes, often caused by bacterial infections. MJ Astaxanthin is a member of the beta-carotene family. It is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory recognized by Health Canada for its ability to reduce eye fatigue. While its anti-inflammatory action can be helpful throughout the body, the local effect on blepharitis is not guaranteed. It is not intuitively the most useful product in this context.

Diane Morin: I've been taking Omega 3 concentrate and Astaxanthin for two weeks now. Should I also take Eye Health because I had a test and was told I had mild cataracts? Thank you.

MJ Eye Health contains lutein and zeaxanthin. Clinical studies have shown that taking this combination reduces the risk of developing cataracts. However, when cataracts are already present, clinical study results are less conclusive, and there appears to be less benefit from consuming lutein and zeaxanthin. That being said, these natural components help protect the eye from blue light and oxidative stress.

Dalidadouda Da: When you have SIBO, you can't take just any probiotic because it makes the condition worse?

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) is a condition characterized by excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine caused by food stagnation there. Causes include abdominal surgery, diverticulitis, certain inflammatory bowel diseases, and others. The usual therapy is based on antibiotics, so yes, adding probiotics may not seem like an intuitive approach. However, certain probiotics can be used, such as baker's yeast (Saccharamyces boulardii), which is not affected by antibiotics and has shown interesting results in clinical studies. Common probiotics, particularly those based on lactic acid bacteria, also appear useful for repopulating the intestinal flora after antibiotic treatment. It is strongly recommended to consult a healthcare professional specialized in the gastrointestinal field for proper guidance.

Marie C Picard: Can Immune, Strength and 5 Immunomodulatory Medicinal Mushrooms be mixed together?

In principle, yes, the MJ Immune, Strength, and 5 Immunomodulating Medicinal Mushrooms products are complementary and can be combined. Only astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is present in both the Immune and Strength tinctures. That being said, the MJ Immune tincture should primarily be taken for a short period of time during upper respiratory infections (colds, flu), while the other two products can be taken for longer periods.

Josée Archambault: Can you take too much lutein?

Although lutein is considered quite safe, too much of anything is never good! Recommended doses are around 6 to 10 mg per day, but doses as high as 20 mg per day have been used in clinical studies without significant side effects. Above these doses, it is strongly recommended to be accompanied by a healthcare professional.
