Carotenoids and Eye and Brain Health

Les caroténoïdes et la santé des yeux et du cerveau

Interesting, this text published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience 1 highlights the influence that carotenoids can have on eye and brain health, particularly in women because they live longer than men but tend to suffer more from age-related diseases and disabilities, including visual and cognitive loss.

For example, lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoid pigments found in specific tissues of the eye and brain, have been shown to prevent the loss that precedes age-related macular degeneration and some forms of dementia. These pigments act as powerful antioxidants/anti-inflammatory agents and filter blue light.

Dietary intake of carotenoids would therefore have a positive influence from a prevention perspective. Dark green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, broccoli, and squash, are among the foods richest in lutein and zeaxanthin. Not to mention certain microgreens.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are also found in our Eye Health Support supplement, a product approved to help:

  • To improve the optical density of macular pigment
  • To preserve vision/eye health in certain conditions (associated with sun damage) such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration
  • To reduce the risk of developing cataracts
  • Source of antioxidants/Provides antioxidants for the maintenance of good health and eye health.

Without a doubt, including them in your daily routine is an excellent preventive health idea to adopt!
