Discussion with Pierre Haddad, scientific researcher, pharmacologist & formulator of the Health Support formula
Topics covered and transcript of remarks*:
2:20 - The short story of Health Support
Following your book Longevity, for which I wrote a preface, in which you covered healthy lifestyle habits and the important role of supplements, you shared with me this desire to do something to help people age in good health and prolong that healthy life.
3:40 - What is aging?
The equation is very simple: as we age, damage increases and the body's ability to repair itself diminishes. It's somewhat inevitable; we're not eternal.
5:00 - Stressors in the environment
- Chemicals - what we breathe, what we swallow, what we come into contact with
- Radiation - ultraviolet, all the waves from our wireless devices
- Temperature differences - which can be adapted to, for example, with infrared saunas and ice baths
- Infections
- Bad habits such as alcohol and smoking
- Mental stress - which we experience a lot in our societies
6:20 - Proteins in the body that sense stress
There are proteins in the body that sense physical and metabolic stress. Sirtuins, a class of proteins, will improve the body's ability to respond to them.
They did some tests and discovered that what makes all kinds of animals, from earthworms to mice, live long lives is calorie restriction, meaning 20 to 30% less food than what we normally expect (physiological needs). They looked at the elements involved and discovered these proteins that respond to stress.
Health Support Composition
Resveratrol
7:20 - One of the molecules put into the mixture is Resveratrol, which acts on these sirtuins.
Many of the formulas on the market to improve longevity, or to live healthier longer, have elements like Resveratrol.
I looked at the bigger picture; I was interested in all the systems that normally fail with age.
There are about fifteen components, and I would like to present them to you, as well as the logic behind them.
8:40 - The first thing that came to my mind was precisely the mind, memory, loss of cognitive functions, decline, neurodegenerative diseases.
My mother unfortunately suffers from dementia (which resembles Alzheimer's without being identified as such, but it's the same principle).
I was inspired by what I was giving him. There are two aspects to the things I was giving him. The first is neuroprotection, to protect against damage that is normally associated with age. Then we talk about oxidative stress, poor oxygen, inflammation, and metabolic disturbances. So, nutrient management also plays a role with age.
12:00 - Nervous system and memory
Neuroprotection
There are three main elements for the neuroprotection aspect:
1. Hydroxytyrosol
Hydroxytyrosol is a powerful amphiphilic antioxidant, meaning there's a part of the molecule that likes water and a part that likes oil. This is interesting because it can go into the liquid where the cells bathe and into the cell membrane. This is important because there are a lot of things that happen in the water of the cells, but also in the cell membranes.
One of its special features is that it also helps protect LDL cholesterol, the bad cholesterol that actually becomes bad when it's oxidized. If we can prevent oxidation, that's important. Hydroxytyrosol does just that.
It also helps improve the enzymes that produce our own antioxidants. Here we will talk about glutathione, which is very important. The body has its own antioxidants to protect itself against this harmful oxygen.
One source of bad oxygen is mitochondria. Mitochondria are our body's little energy factories.
All cells that produce ATP (which is our "gas"), to provide energy, move muscles, ... It goes through a chain of electrons that uses oxygen to donate electrons and create ATP.
With age, mitochondria begin to couple this electron transport less well to the small motor. Thus, electrons leak, creating more toxic oxygen, which will stick to the proteins, DNA, fats, and lipids in our cells. This damages cells, and the body is less and less able to repair them.
Antioxidants are very important to have, and glutathione is one of the main antioxidants in our body itself. Hydroxytyrosol increases the body's ability to produce these enzymes that make glutathione.
Glutathione is our own defense.
2. N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine
15:50 - Glutathione contains three amino acids. One of these is cysteine. N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine is the precursor to one of the building blocks of glutathione. It will promote its production. We need to feed the body this N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine to help build up glutathione.
3. R-alpha lipoic acid
16:45 - R-alpha lipoic acid is another amphiphilic antioxidant (one part water-loving and one part oil-loving). It also penetrates the brain well. It also has interesting effects on the metabolic system, since it helps manage blood sugar. In diabetes, there have been interesting effects.
Here I'm making the leap between neuroprotection, because it's an antioxidant that penetrates the brain, and benefits in the metabolic system (I'll come back to this later).
17:24 - It's three elements - Hydroxytyrosol, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, and R-alpha Lipoic Acid are neuroprotective. They'll also work elsewhere in the body, but because it gets into the brain and helps glutathione, it helps a lot.
Ginkgo biloba
19:10 - Ginkgo biloba is well known. There are not only clinical studies, but also meta-analyses, a grouping of several studies that clearly show that Ginkgo biloba helps preserve memory. This is very interesting. And there is the total amount in the Health Support formula (so you can stop buying your Ginkgo biloba).
So, three neuroprotective elements (Hydroxytyrosol, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine and R-alpha Lipoic Acid) and one that helps memory (Ginkgo biloba)!
Ginkgo biloba is interesting because it works both on circulation and on neurotransmitters - the small signals between our neurons - to make them function better.
So, it also helps general circulation. It's interesting, because in neurodegenerative diseases like dementia, there's no single profile, there's really a range, and it's precisely damage to the brain and damage to the circulation of the brain. So it's a mixture of the two, and Ginkgo works on both. It's very interesting.
It fills the nervous system and memory.
21:15 - Immune system
The second important system is the immune system. With age, it declines and needs to be strengthened.
There are 4 components in Immune System Health Support.
1. Reishi
21:20 - I chose an adaptogenic mushroom, Reishi, which is well known in traditional herbalism for supporting immune system function.
Its Latin name is Ganoderma lucidum. It has this aspect of lucidity and facing one's life.
2. Nigella
23:40 - There is also Nigella, my famous fetish plant, which is also very well known for all its effects, and which is also, I suspect, an adaptogenic plant.
As a little anecdote: a Moroccan arborist put some seeds in a handkerchief for me. He rubbed them together, then told me to breathe, and then I felt my lungs... It's known to help with colds and all that. I also take black cumin every day.
3. Zinc
24:15 - Zinc, which we've heard a lot about during the pandemic, because it supports. It's a mineral, a micronutrient that's important for the immune system.
4. Vitamin A
And vitamin A, which is also very important.
So, four elements for the immune system.
26:45 - Musculoskeletal system (joints): 5 elements
Hydrolyzed collagen, its 3 cofactors (Vitamin C, Zinc, Copper) and Turmeric
With age, it creaks, it starts to go less well.
Hydrolyzed collagen and its 3 cofactors (Vitamin C, Zinc, Copper)
26:54 - There is hydrolyzed collagen, which we already talked about during a live broadcast, which helps a lot to rebuild cartilage - but you have to not be too far along in the disease.
I've included three elements to support it. These are cofactors for the enzymes that make collagen in our joints, skin, bones, etc.: Vitamin C, Zinc, and Copper.
We've seen zinc in the immune system, but it's also there because it's a cofactor for an enzyme that helps make collagen.
So with the amount that I put in the formula, it's going to help use that hydrolyzed collagen to rebuild cartilage.
Turmeric
28:00 - Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory. We talked about this at the beginning. Oxidative stress and inflammatory stress are very important in aging. So, it's very important to have turmeric.
The claim is there at Health Canada because several studies have shown that it helps manage joint pain.
28:30 - Digestive system (the cardiometabolic axis - metabolism)
Milk thistle: targets the liver. It's a plant that greatly helps the liver in its functions. It is recognized and even used as a medicine in cases of intoxication or poisoning from certain mushrooms.
There are plenty of other elements that I've already mentioned that are in the formula and that help the cardiometabolic system:
- Resveratrol is neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and also helps with diabetes. So, it's very interesting to have it in the formula.
- Hydroxytyrosol, I mentioned earlier that it helps protect your LDL from oxidation, which helps prevent atherosclerosis.
- Nigella, which I put in Metabzen, precisely because our own laboratory has contributed to research in the direction of protection against diabetes.
Turmeric also helps the liver. It makes bile flow, which greatly aids digestive functions.
Vitamin D
30:00 - Finally, vitamin D, which we haven't talked about, which Health Canada has made us reduce to 1,000 units per day in the capsule, because we know it's available elsewhere.
Recommendations go up to 4,000 - the maximum recommended dose per day. There are several researchers, several people, who believe that we are so deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D is good for the immune system, the cardiovascular system, and metabolism. It is truly an essential vitamin.
31:30 - Health support, equivalent to 4 or 5 products
Honestly, it's really equivalent to buying 4 or 5 products separately to get the same results. You're right, it's not that expensive for such a comprehensive product.
33:00 - If we want to live a long, healthy life...
If we want to live a long, healthy life, it's really about good lifestyle habits. We mustn't stop hammering at this point. Move more, eat better, stress less, enjoy the beautiful things that life gives us, the little gifts we have every day, we just have to notice them, because we'll have challenges all our lives. It's also a question of attitude that's important.
34:00 - Supplements, allies
I take a lot of it too. You have to see it as a support, an aid to our stressful lives, to our diet which is not always optimal.
I see supplements as allies if we have a little trouble maintaining an optimal lifestyle.
35:00 - Do we take Health Support all year round?
You can take it constantly. I often take breaks of a few weeks or days, at least twice a year.
It depends on you; you have to listen to yourself.
39:15 - Health Support and Other Supplements
It's complementary to many things. Even though it's a sophisticated formula that supports several aspects of aging, it's still compatible with several others, because we couldn't physically combine Omega-3s, which are oil, with this powder. So, supplement with Omega-3s, with fiber, which is important for the digestive system. All of this is complementary.
Individual needs vary quite a bit, depending on diet, body...
Two pieces of information - answers to questions - shared during the live broadcast:
At 22:55 - It is possible to open the capsule, put it in yogurt, compote or something else.
At 34:00 - I watched La Totale during MJ Fest. It's compatible. I mean, there's no problem combining these two formulas.
