A recent article published in La Presse highlights the positive effects of camu camu, which helps reduce the level of fat in the liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which affects more than 7 million Canadians).
For a period of 12 weeks, 30 people took either camu camu extract or a placebo in this randomized clinical trial. Afterward, an MRI scan was performed on the participants to measure liver fat levels.
The results revealed that taking camu camu extract led to a 7.43% decrease in liver lipids in study participants, while an 8.42% increase in liver fat was observed with the placebo.
Professor André Marette mentions that two mechanisms of action of these small polyphenols have been identified by his team: they could reduce the formation of lipid droplets in the liver and also stimulate the degradation of lipids by oxidation. It is probably the combination of these two mechanisms that explains the high effectiveness of the extract.
They hypothesize that the initial gut microbiota plays a role in the response to polyphenols. If they identify the factors involved, they could potentially adjust the microbiota and improve the extract's effectiveness.
