How do I practice oil pulling?
It's very simple! To start, I put a spoonful of sesame oil in my mouth and swish it around. According to traditional Ayurvedic methods, this can last up to 20 minutes. During this time, I go about my business. Once I've swished the oil around my mouth and between my teeth, I spit it out into a trash can (or outside), rather than down the sink, as the oil can harden and clog the pipes.
Note that the first two mornings can be difficult. After that, you can't do without them!
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic ritual that complements our good habits: it doesn't replace brushing or flossing. The idea of practicing it on an empty stomach in the morning is to rid our mouths of bad bacteria—the oil "absorbs" them, if you will. Afterward, I use a tongue scraper to complete this idea.
There are some great articles on our site, including one written by a dentist. You'll find the scientific references there.
“I’ve been doing oil pulling every morning for almost a year, and at my last visit to the dentist in May, she saw a difference and noted that my gums were very healthy. My partner started this summer, and within a month, his gums stopped bleeding. Since then, he’s been encouraged and has continued this ritual.” - Johanne V.
