- An alternative school is a public school with a special project or purpose.
- To start an alternative school, you need to get approval from the school board. So, submit your project to the school board, believe in it, and above all, never give up (if the board is open, the process can take two years).
- There are no homework assignments, numerical tests, grades, dictations, or rote learning. Learning is done differently. Children are given tasks adapted to their level.
- Classroom discipline is the responsibility of the children. They have a class council and together decide on the rules that govern the classroom and their time. The role of teachers is to give them the tools.
- By the time they reach 6th grade, children are at the same level and have learned the same things as children leaving a regular school.
- Parents are greatly involved in the daily routine.
And coming soon: the multi-age concept, the transition to secondary school, learning disabilities.
