Interns so appreciated

Des stagiaires tellement appréciés

As part of my documentary about children, we take a moment to film the social integration of adult trainees.

For the past four years, I've had the chance to work with Daniel. Daniel (on the left in the photo) is one of the interns at my children's school. Daniel is always happy and caring, a huge plus in our lives.

During school hours, the school welcomes a group of adults living with either an intellectual disability, a pervasive developmental disorder, or both. These adults are all 21 years old and operate under the supervision of their most patient and generous special education teacher, Manon.

Manon pointed out to me that adults living with various disorders are often isolated, working in factories in the dark, without the chance of experiencing social integration. Here, they spend their days busy and valued, in a lively, bright environment, surrounded by children, parents, and teachers.

Monique, the wonderful director who highlighted their cohabitation at the beginning of this promising project, praised their importance to me: "we could no longer do without them: they carry out essential tasks, give us time."

For the young people, difference is experienced without ever being ridiculed. On the contrary! Everyone knows the interns' strengths and asks for their help with puzzles in daycare or their participation in games at recess.

And I appreciate every kind hello Daniel gives me, overflowing with happiness. He's part of my life, as well as that of everyone else who experiences school differently, naturally.

When I took this photo, it was his birthday: the children came to sing for him, and I still get goosebumps. Thank you for these beautiful emotions.
