Hydrogenated water and oxidative stress

Interesting!

According to a study, hydrogen-rich water may be effective in improving mood, anxiety, and autonomic nervous function in daily life. 1

  • Preventing the accumulation of oxidative stress caused by daily stress and daily work contributes to maintaining quality of life and improving the effects of aging, as chronic oxidative stress and inflammation cause deteriorations in central nervous system function, leading to low quality of life.
  • Hydrogen has antioxidant activity and can prevent inflammation, and thus may help improve quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the effects of hydrogen-rich water consumption on the quality of life of adult volunteers using psychophysiological tests, including questionnaires and tests of autonomic nervous function and cognitive function. This study was conducted on 26 volunteers divided into two groups: one group drank hydrogen water (600 ml/day) and the other, placebo water (600 ml/day), for 4 weeks. The hydrogen water group was found to have significantly lower sympathetic nervous activity in the resting state compared to the volunteers who drank the placebo water. After 4 weeks, the adult volunteers experienced improvements in mood, anxiety, and autonomic nervous function.
  • These results suggest that hydrogenated water may enhance quality of life through effects that increase central nervous system functions involving mood, anxiety after daily workload, and stress.

Molecular hydrogen : a novel antioxidant and anti-inflammatory therapy for rheumatoid arthritis and related diseases. 2

  • Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which progressive joint destruction leads to morbidity. It is also associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, which can lead to cardiovascular disease and mortality. The therapeutic goal is to control systemic inflammation to achieve not only remission of symptoms but also improvement of overall health. Possible expectations regarding the potential benefits of molecular hydrogen (H2) in reducing oxidative stress, resulting from inflammatory factors, are raised and discussed in this study. They include the prevention of rheumatoid arthritis and associated atherosclerosis, as well as the therapeutic validity of rheumatoid arthritis which are at the center of the inflammatory response.
  • While the mechanisms responsible for the onset of rheumatoid arthritis remain unclear, reactive oxygen species (upstream and downstream of the NF-κB and TNFα pathways, which are central to the inflammatory response) play an important role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. Among the reactive oxygen species, the hydroxyl radical is the most harmful, and molecular hydrogen (H2) is a selective scavenger for this species.
  • Recently, molecular hydrogen (H2) has been shown to be useful when administered alongside conventional treatment in rheumatoid arthritis as it acts to reduce oxidative stress in patients. Particularly in the early stages, molecular hydrogen (H2) has shown significant therapeutic potential, which has also appeared to aid in the diagnosis and treatment decisions of rheumatoid arthritis.

Did you know that...

Hydrogen in the body acts as an oxidation regulator. It is not an antioxidant in the strict sense, but it does play a role in inflammation.

There is a lot of research that shows that when we increase our hydrogen intake (the best vehicle of which is water) we notice effects:

  • Anti-inflammatory effect; 3
  • Increases recovery; 4
  • Reduces inflammation, antioxidant; 5
  • Neuroprotective effect. 6

Not to be specific, but backed by some truly exciting research. Don't expect miracles from drinking hydrogenated water; it works very subtly and over the long term.

We place a tablet in the water and observe that the H2O separates into O and H2, seeing the small bubbles rise.
