One review suggested that kombucha may have multiple potential health benefits, including reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease, cancer, bacterial and viral infections, anxiety and depression, and diabetes. 1
Two studies published in 2023 have established a link with diabetes. The first clinical study, 2 which aimed to evaluate kombucha for its antihyperglycemic activities in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, mentions that kombucha can significantly reduce postprandial hyperglycemia (hyperglycemia that occurs during digestion).
The same idea is mentioned in a second study: that is, that kombucha would lead to a decrease in blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. The results suggest that live kombucha can produce reductions in acute postprandial hyperglycemia. 3 Further studies investigating the mechanisms and potential therapeutic benefits of kombucha are warranted.
Here's a great reason to swap soda for kombucha
Approximately 65% of adults in the United States consume sugary drinks daily. Did you know that a 2023 study found that postmenopausal women who consumed at least one can of soda daily were 2.5 times more likely to succumb to chronic liver disease?
These flavored sugary drinks, consumed in excess, pose an increased risk of diabetes, obesity, and "metabolic syndrome." Excess visceral fat in the abdominal region has a direct impact on increasing cardiovascular risk.
A group of 98,786 women aged 50 to 79, enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative from 1993 to 1998, was analyzed by the researchers, in 40 clinical centers in the United States, they were followed until March 1, 2020. The results showed that participants who had a daily consumption of at least one sugary soft drink or fruit drink were 1.75 times more likely than others to be diagnosed with liver cancer, or 2.5 times more likely than others to die from chronic liver disease. 3
As this is an observational study, it is not certain that soda consumption is linked to the onset of these liver pathologies... However, the researchers hope to be able to confirm these results and identify the biological pathways of these associations in the future during other research.
Reducing sugar consumption by replacing soda with kombucha, while regularly adding doses of probiotics and antioxidants to your diet, what a great alternative!
