The 3000 year old Ayurvedic Tradition of Oil Pulling has incredible effects on oral and dental hygiene as well as overall systemic health. Nadia Sofia, collaborator with Jmagazine, shared her morning ritual with me and I just had to share it with you!

How can we whiten teeth, destroy bacteria and fungus, all while improving the health of gums naturally? With one simple, pleasant and surprising effective technique. Dr. Bruce Fife has written an entire book dedicated to touting the benefits of « Oil Pulling ». He describes how the oil acts as a cleaning agent by removing bacteria and other debris from our teeth and gums.

So how does one, « Pull-Oil? »

Simply take 1-3 Tbs of Organic Raw Cold-Pressed Seed/Nut Oil (Sesame, Sunflower or Coconut) and swish it around your mouth (pulling and pushing the oil between your teeth) for about 20 minutes. You know that you are done when the oil changes from clear to a thin, white liquid. Once you are done, spit the oil out into the garbage, DO NOT SWALLOW! (The oil is now full of bacteria, toxins and waste)

The feeling in your mouth after Oil Pulling is simply marvellous. Dr. Fife offers an explanation about the effectiveness of this method: Our mouth is  inhabited by billions of bacteria, viruses, parasites and their metabolic waste products which, precipitate the deterioration of our gums as well as increase our risk of other health conditions (arthritis, cardiac disease, menstrual pain). Our immune system is constantly battling these deleterious agents, and in the presence of additional burdens (stress, poor diet, environmental toxins), these mouth toxins could increase our risk of developing disease.

My friend, Nadia, practices Oil Pulling every day and not only has it kept her teeth sparkling white and beautiful, it has stimulated the regeneration of her receding gums so that they now protect the roots of her teeth as they are supposed to.

Personally, after my second day of Oil Pulling, I wanted to get out of bed in the morning to get swishing! Several months later, I can confidently say that I have reversed some of my own issues. I adore the feeling of hydration and the oily protective barrier it leaves in my mouth.

Here is what my morning ritual entails:

  • I use a wooden popsicle stick to scrape my tongue, removing the white residue.
  • I rinse my mouth with water (you can brush your teeth exclusively with water too!)
  • I take my « shooter » of sesame oil and I swish it over my gums and pull it through my teeth,.
  • My children giggle and my partner follows my ritual (for less time though).

I want to be sure that I keep going for 20 minutes, so I fuel my concentration by thinking about all of the positive secondary effects….

Here are some of the incredible benefits to be gained:

  • Whiter Teeth
  • Healthier Gums
  • Better Breath
  • Improved Energy
  • Improved Concentration and Focus
  • …. many more

NB. It’s normal for the first 2-3 times to cause slight to moderate nausea. Trust me, it is really worth it, if you manage to persevere! This simple and ancient ritual soon becomes pleasant and you will wonder how you ever lived without it!!
